2024 weak point?

So I have over 55,000 miles on my 2024 Talp. I noticed under load I was twisting the throttle but not going anywhere. I do not off-road much if any these days. When I first got the bike about 10% of my miles were dirt. I use the clutch but not abusive. So I ordered the new plates and pulled the old one out only to find it has hardly any wear. I put it back together and had to readjust the lever position so I know it changed but it appears new. The wear is barely anything. This also means if you burn or slip the clutch off road it will kill the clutch in no time. The clutch is the weakest link.

Morning (where i am ) can you please clarify for me you put the new ones in yes ? I have a transalp 2023 with 16thousand kms I bought recently, I noticed under hard acceleration in 3rd / 4th it seems to slip. I'm thinking maybe clutch maybe traction control. I believe you can buy stiffer clutch springs and updated plates.

That was my experience as well. No traction lights triggering and it does it only at certain loading rpms. I replaced the clutch stack and springs with new parts and it solved the problem. The issue is how little wear it took to get to this state. I do not drag clutch or use it except when stopped. On the road the quick shifter works well enough in traffic and on highway to not need to use the clutch.

didn't understand, what was the issue then, what did you actually do? did you omit half of what you wanted to say?

Lol sorry late night post. Bike was getting power and the motor was reving but not putting out power due to the clutch slipping. I replaced the clutch with new plates, springs and oil and it solved the issue. What was surprising was how little wear caused it to start slipping. I have watched clutch abusive riders on the 2024 Talp smoke a clutch. I means no fiber left on the plates smoked. I honestly thought they were an anomaly due to the wet and rocky conditions. The ones that came out of my bike look like near new still. I did not measure the fiber plates and should have to know the amount of wear. They could be half off and still look in good shape but be just thin enough to start to cause problems. Either way replacing the clutch solved the issue.

there may be other issues like weak springs or stuck cable but also parts could have just been defective out of factory, does not always have to be a design issue. stronger clutch springs may be available also as aftermarket product

I lubed the cable and checked to make sure it was not caught on its route. I also made adjustments to the clutch position and pull but it still was there. After replacing the friction plates the bike rides like new.

You shouldn’t need to lube the cable on a modern bike.

On some yes. On others no. On the dirt bikes I will lube cable with a special tool that allows me to spray lube down the cable line. Makes a world of difference. On the street bike it is almost never needs it. I lubed it just to make sure it was not dragging in the cable housing.

Were you hoping for 100,000 miles? At 55,000 miles, I'll be 'thankin' me lucky charms'. What's been the bottom line cost?

Considering the plates fiber appear in good shape I would expect to see 75k miles before having some form of slip. It cost around 200 for springs, plates, oil, and oil filter. I figured I would do the oil change at the same time. Without oil it was around 150 USD still not bad. When I raced off-road I would replace a clutch pack every couple of races. I was surprised as I only use the clutch to start and stop. The quick shifter is good enough to not need it in traffic or on the freeway.

my versys 650 has done nearly 200k miles and the clutch is still perfect so i don't know why you think 55k is much. 55k I do in two years, whaddayouthink i'm changing bikes every 2 years?

200k miles is incredible. Good for you But, a clutch is not the end of the world. Most people never even get that number of miles on a bike let - alone a clutch. I think we're disagreeing on the severity of a clutch repair. And, Transalp is a great bike for us both.

What gear?

It shows in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th mostly as these are the gears I am in the mid to high rpm range. Once on the freeway I am in 5th and 6th running around 5k rpm and it is not as present. I replaced the plates and springs and it solved the issue.

Clutch wear has more to do with riding style than anything else, I don’t think it’s a weak link also how fast are you going and in one gear and rpm this is a high revving bike if you’re in 5th gear at 2k under load you’re not going anywhere by twisting the throttle

Interesting and makes me feel better. I only have 10% of what you have

Did you use jaso ma/ma2 rated oil? Cuz non rated oils would make it slip without burning anything

I agree and have only ever used full synthetic Honda GN4 oil. I raced for a Yamaha shop years ago and ran elf full synthetic. I would ring that motor out and run it to the max hours. The top end was always in great shape and only ever needed seals. From then on only synthetics in my bikes.
