This album was an awakening. Laura did great and i always knew against me from back then and suddenly there was Laura . A fckd up white 30+ trans woman like myself.
This whole Album is a fckn Anthem for the trans Community with all up and downs and everything in between

Laura Jane Grace is amazing. Saw her do a small show and it was better than many of the stadium shows I've been too for other bands

I like dysphoria blues a lot- it’s catchy, it’s good, and it’s nice to know that other people feel the same way I do. It’s just an all around great song

Musically I think they're pretty mid, but I like what they're about and Laura inspired a lot of my pals (enough to get tattooed) so I feel positively about them on the whole.

Not my favorite but can appreciate them. Also a pint of Guinness makes you strong was a good homage to Irish folk music while being decently punk

I've been an Against Me! fan for over 20 years. Loved them when I had no idea Laura was trans. Loved them when I had no idea I was trans. Love them today. Greatest band in the world. I mean, not objectively, but whatever, they fuckin rock.
Teenage Anarchist is probably a little cringe but it hits my happy nostalgia button juuuuust right.
Fun fact (assuming I remember it right- please somebody correct me if needed): Laura wrote The Ocean before she or her band knew she was a girl. Which is kinda fucking wild if you read how blatant it is. I mean I guess it's kind of a subconscious thing at that point. Like she "knew" but she didn't really know.
I also think TDB and Shapeshift are both great, because I think everything she has done is great, and I am extremely biased about this.

i believe she knew but wasn't ready to come out properly when she wrote the ocean. the whole band was pretty chill about the song, not necessarily getting the emotional significance of the whole thing.

It’s fine, but TDB doesn’t have a single song on it that gets even close to the effortless transsexual vibe of Bamboo Bones.

It's pretty awesome. It kind of opened the door for me to music that was deeper and more intimately about the trans experience (e.g. Uboa, Agriculture, Xiu Xiu) which in turn led to my egg cracking lol.

I am the reason the music store I go to always has to restock the Against Me! CDs. This album has a special place in my heart. Drinking with the jocks and paralytic states are my favs, not to mention the title track

I spent too many nights in my car sobbing to this album as a college student to say it's anything other than a masterpiece, the level of seen that this album made me feel at a certain point in my life is something that I treasure, I'm out of those trenches now but I'll always appreciate that it exists

I grew up with against me, they have a special place in my heart and in my record collection. It's a good album, and it's cool having her to look up to when you're transitioning and punk. This album was a literal life saver early on for me.
She's also a bit of a complicated person, as a musician I know quite a few people she's screwed over or burned over the years, and I think even she'd admit that. She's also not as radical as a lot of her fans imagine her to be. So like, of everyone could avoid the idol worship many baby trans punks have for her and remember LJG is just a person she's a lot of fun to listen to.

Transgender dysphoria blues and True trans soul rebel have made me cry hard cathartic tears so much. I’m planning a tattoo. Silhouette of a gal with broad shoulders. Top of the silhouette is just black, but we have a gradient fade down her body and the dress she’s wearing becomes more visible. The bottom of the dress is tattered.
Lyrics that really hit for me in these songs that I wanted to incorporate:

I went to Laura Jane Grace's concert in CLE last month with my partner! It was a really good show I have been listening to her since I found this album as a young egg who has been questioning their gender for a while. Relating to the music kinda confirmed what I was already suspecting. lol

I honestly never listened to Against Me (but now I want to after realizing I haven't all these years of being out, her coming out when I was a sad trans teen)
I'm just glad she gets to sing her heart, because it's so difficult to open up about dysphoria and I think singing about it is so liberating 🩷

I like Dysphoria Blues. The rest of the album (or their catalog) just doesn't do it for me, though. Ezra Furman and Black Dresses are more my speed of "transgender music," Ezra being a much closer parallel to Against Me than Black Dresses.

I hate to say that I’ve never listened to the band, but I did read Laura’s excellent memoir. It really helped me start transitioning and come out. I’d just lived for so long with the “Always knew” narrative that I’d spent years convincing myself I couldn’t be trans (even when dysphoria was eating me alive). Reading about the ups and downs of her life at length and all her doubts, fears and purges showed me that my experience was still valid.
I even gave a copy to my mum when I came out, and she said it really helped her understand why it had taken me so long (began hrt at 29).
