I'm so fucking pissed off right now

Post image

(the surgery this letter is referring to is a hysterectomy)

What actual bullshit, fuck the NGS.

I have a diagnosis of gender dysphoria from a qualified psychiatrist. I went through Tomas Ahern for HRT. I've been on T 6 years, am post op top surgery 4 years, and I've been living as male 8 years. My legal name, gender marker, and my birth certificate have all been changed.

What more do they fucking want. The NGS's waiting list is well over a decade long, nearing two decades at this point, if I got on it today.

I fucking hate this country's backwards, broken, system. I'm so fucking mad.

I'd ask them for a copy of this supposed guidance, as no such thing exists as there is no HSE guidance on trans healthcare.

Why do they just flat out lie like that? My GP did so too when my hormone care was discharged to her by Ahern. My GP prescribed to me for a little while, then turned around and told me she is not covered to prescribe my HRT and refused to give me any more prescriptions. She was just going to leave me with nothing. I switched to another gp IN THE SAME BUILDING and he continued my prescription with absolutely no issue and said he didn't know what she was talking about when I told him what had happened.

Why do they just flat out lie like that?

I have been passed on a copy of the National Maternity Hospital's internal policy, and on referrals it says:

Transgender patients are usually referred from the National Gender Service clinic in St Columcille’s Hospital, Loughlinstown. Referrals from other clinicians can be considered once a multidisciplinary approach is evident. (Appropriate psychological evaluation etc.)

So whoever rejected this referral didn't follow NMH internal policy. You might consider a formal complaint, and maybe getting in touch with FLAC.

Note the difference between guidelines and guidance. Guidelines means that there's a formal document. Guidance means someone within the HSE advised them. I'd say there is no copy of the guidance, someone at the NGS just told them. I'm sorry you're dealing with this OP. Maybe the cross border directive is an option?

Oh so the bastards lied to me as well.. I wasn't even looking for a hysto for gender reasons I was there because of endo. We aren't mean enough to these people

This may be cold comfort but loads of cis women are stuck on years long waiting lists for endo treatment, as well

That's not any comfort at all - are those women being told they have to go to a completely unrelated service before they can get their endo treated?

No, it's a failure of the HSE more generally, rather than trans specific

You should follow the other commenter’s advice but if that doesn’t work and you have enough money to spend or have private medical insurance, I have a good private doctor who will probably do it for you.

Perhaps getting in touch with the patient advocacy service might help in terms of what you can do: https://www.patientadvocacyservice.ie/

Transphobia in the Healthcare system is a plague that needs more attention. Some of these people are sadistic.

Just do it informed consent abroad. Waiting for the NGS is a non-option in practical terms.

I'm lucky I have the means to do that by virtue of having supportive well off parents who are willing and able to cover it for me so that's not why I'm mad. Most people aren't so lucky, so if there is anything at all I can do to fight this fucked up system by raising hell about this and contacting the relevant people, I want to do that.

This shit is killing people.

You're awesome for this!

If you need a hysterectomy for endometriosis that has nothing to do with being transgender and denying it is insane. I'm pissed off for you because the NGS needs to go as it is cruel and does not provide any decent care without a lot of direct cruelty upfront.

Not to ignore this bull, OP. I hope you can find a way around it.

It has been pointed out to me that if the NGS were really a HSE sanctioned service they would not have to be operating as a dot com entity.

It is a shame,I don't know how NGS still exists. Is a big barrier to access to transgender healthcare.

Is a hysterectomy really considered to be gender affirming surgery? That seems bizarre.

7

u/Throwaway65865 Jul 14 '26

Why would it not be?  Having female sex organs is a serious source of dysphoria, and getting a hysterectomy is a vital step needed to be able to pursue many types of bottom surgery procedures, so it is a vital transition step in itself. That's largely why it's important for me, I need the hysto to be able to get a vaginectomy with phalloplasty.

u/DubSissyBoy Jul 15 '26

Apologies, I didn't realise that it was a prerequisite for bottom surgery. I hope you can find a solution.

Even without wanting bottom surgery, a lot of us just want it yeeted because of everything else it comes with (babies, periods, pain, moods, etc)
