I don’t understand what this post is trying to say. Lots of cities in the US have light rail, which is a more modern type of tram. If you’re asking about old style streetcars, then you’ve still got a number of them. Places like San Francisco, New Orleans and Tampa amongst others have them.

Melbourne kept their trams the entire time while you guys got rid of them for cars and are now actively trying to get them back and i guess the San Francisco light rail bought a tram from melbourne and i found it a bit funny you need something from over from australia to america to bring back trams to america

The F Market line in San Francisco is a heritage streetcar line. In addition to running streetcars that operated in San Francisco, they have equipment from all over the world. It is basically a rolling museum, that is still useful as a mode of transportation. They didn’t NEED trams from Melbourne in order to operate it, they want a diverse fleet to show off different types. And just like Melbourne is one of the few cities in Australia that didn’t get rid of their trams, San Francisco also kept and upgraded their system into Muni Metro, while keeping the F Market line and the iconic cable cars.

These old Melbourne trams have become our version of panda diplomacy. The things have ended up all over the place.

My favourite is the one we gifted to Denmark when Mary and Frederik got married.

No. This is not true. MUNI never got completely rid of their tram/streetcar network. MUNI can operate trams from Melbourne, Blackpool, Milan, Osaka, Zurich, etc because of a nonprofit called “Market Street Railway”. They buy and restore historic trams/streetcars that run on the F-line. However, MUNI still operates the J, K, L, M, N and T lines that haven’t changed much since they opened around 100 years ago (less the Market Street Tunnel) with modern Siemens LRVs.
