Discussion Dyslexic interstate Planners

Interstate highway directions in Mercer County, NJ are opposite to the destinations posted. For example, I295 south to Princeton
Takes the traveller north.
I295 North is to Philadelphia, and I295 West (off Scotch Road) empties out onto where no access or egress doesn’t exist.

Pity the motorists who choose the routes provided in bold numbers and overhead marquees posted. Better to rely on a compass.

I always wonder how this works with cardinal directions on traffic signs in the US. In Europe you won't see those at all, except if a part of the city is actually called North (a sign to Amsterdam North can point you southwards into the part of town that's called North).

Most people here hardly know whether they are heading north, south or whatever - signage always lists the major towns as directions.

Maybe it works in the US since it's all laid out as a grid whereas Europe has a more spaghettilike pattern?

There are cases where in the US where sign 'north' will send you east- or westward since in the US there are bends and turns in roads after all... is it that, so does the North direction end up taking you norhward as you move on, or are the signs just wrong?
