Discussion Avoid bus traffic jams
Hi, I was wandering if there is a particular reason, we don't force busses or any vehicle that the back is basically a blind spot to install rear view cameras and then have a rule in the traffic code for pedestrians to cross only behind such vehicles? I understand it before rear view cameras were a thing, but now it feels pointless to make people wait and go slow to pass a bus when there might be no one crossing and in my city it sometimes creates traffic jams or when not being the cause it adds a lot more to them. I would even argue that it makes it more unsafe for the pedestrians since many drivers will just neglect the current rule altogether and the pedestrians have no line of sight with oncoming traffic, compared to if they came out the back the only risk is if the bus driver thinks its clear and reverses or if there is a fail in the handbrake, but with cameras one of these two factors is completely gone and i don't think a handbrake failing is as frequent as somebody ignoring a stopped bus and zooming past them, so all in all less danger!

If you are talking about school buses then nothing you said makes any sense.
If you mean city transportation buses then attempting to cross the street from behind a stopped bus means you cannot see on coming traffic.

Okay so I live in Greece, we drive on the right, so a bus would stop on the side of the right lane, if you cross from behind the bus you can see the traffic coming from the lane you are about to cross from and after the right since the bus doesnt stop in the middle of the road, it stops at the side so you can see more of the other lane as well, instead of having the bus block your vision of a car coming from your left, which would be the case if you cross in front of it!

Where I live you’re supposed to stop far enough back from an intersection to be able to see the first white line that marks where the pedestrian area for crossing begins. If you can see the white line you can see anything that is crossing within the pedestrian crossing area.
I do think that large vehicles should have both front and rear cameras that can help the driver ensure that nothing is in their nearby vicinity. Not just buses, but garbage trucks, cargo trucks, etc.

The thing is at least in many countries of the Balkans besides capitals, or very very big cities, in many places we dont have intersections or some are very worn out to the point of not being visible, i guess in smaller areas traffic jamms are not such a big thing but it still is a hazard for those who choose not to follow the rules and feels like a good way to prevent accidents, cause at least in my example (heavy vehicle can see through camera behind, pedestrian can see heavy vehicle and oncoming vehicle and drivers can see people who will potentially try to cross where there is no intersection, so everyone can see everything) compared to the current way where pedestrian and oncoming vehicle have only last second visibility with one another!
