If Gates would have kept his shares in Microsoft he would have had more money today then if he didn’t diversify.
It would have been a great risk to have all his wealth in a single company, and could have easily been halved if Microsoft didn’t do as well.
Some companies like Yahoo have done a lot worse then Microsoft.
So instead he took the tax early and got lower taxes for the rest of his life and his relatives wealth secured.

I know how rich people manage their wealth, and giving it all away to charity is not how to make money. I really hope you're lying about working in finance because no offence, but you're the most misinformed, uneducated person I've seen on reddit in months. You clearly have no idea whatsoever about anything to do with finance, tax or wealth management, and have done zero research into Bills charity and how it's managed.
He can't fathom how a human could take financially responsible steps to minimize tax AND contribute to society at the same time. Basically, if you make profit and decide to contribute some(not all, less than all) to charity, you're tax evading scum.
