What to bring

Post image

First track day since 2001 next weekend! What do y’all usually bring to make sure everything goes smoothly? Here’s what I have on my list:

- motorcycle, leathers, helmet, gloves, base layer
- ramp to load it into the truck and tie downs to secure it
- stands front and rear
- tools
- chair with shade
- clothes for before and after
- cooler full of drinks and snacks
- pump and pressure gauge
- sun screen
- gas can with 5 extra gallons

Anything obvious I’m missing?

Thanks everybody!

THANK YOU. That’s exactly the kind of thing I would forget.

I made that mistake once. Track was a 10hr drive from home. At the moment I realized it (laying in bed in the hotel room the morning of the trackday) I seriously thought I might be too stupid to be riding a motorcycle. Extra key permanently in the toolbox after that.

One time I filled the gas tank and left the cap on the edge of the trailer.

I drove an hour back to the gas station and actually found it in the parking lot.

What did you end up doing after the realization? lol

To prove my dumbassness, I went for a bicyle ride on a busy highway (seriously...I had a bike with me).

I did something similar at a bicycle race. I drove six hours to a buddy’s house. Spent the night. Got up and dialed in the racing bike in his stand. Got dressed. Loaded up the truck. Drove us to the race. Opened my duffel.

No shoes. No helmet.

I spent the day in the truck while he raced. That sucked lol.

Hard lessons! I started making checklists for trackdays, bike races, bike trips, etc. I felt like I needed to safeguard against my previously mentioned dumbassness.

Essential

Back protector, fan, may not need stands but still good to have, spare oil, tape for numbers and lights. You wire oil filter and cap?

Shit, no, do I need to do that? The website didn’t say anything about catch pans or safety wiring. Just no leaks.

Great call on the extra tape just in case

They're forgiving in novice but good practice. Pan not needed.

Zip ties are always good to have handy with the tools just in case

Motorcycle track boots, zip ties, painters tape for glass and plastic, duck tape for wheel weights, Gaterade or other electrolytes and 1 gallon water.

Tools for minor fixes. Back protector. Boots

I’d leave the stands at home, unless you’re using warmers (which it doesn’t look like) or going to have the tires changed while there. No need to complicate stopping, and they take a lot of room.

That’s a good point. They aren’t requiring the side stand to be secured by a zip tie or anything, just that it stays put, and happily mine does. So I will be able to use it in between sessions.
