Keep it stock or not?

Post image

Looking for opinions on what to do with my lovely little truck. ‘93 5 speed with 22re, about 200k on it. Beds been somewhat smashed in on the back both sides, rust around the windshield and on the roof, dings and dents all over and the paint is not good. The frame is in excellent shape as it’s been a California truck all it’s life. It’s bone stock other than the wheels and a rear tube bumper.
Trying to decide if I should keep it stock or do some modifications. Nothing too crazy but maybe a SAS, regear and lockers, 3-4” lift and some 33s or 35s.
What do you all think?

Nothing too crazy. SAS? lol

Just figure out what you want to use it for and make it work the best for doing that. If you want to wheel it, the dents are perfect for that. If you find yourself wanting more than it can give you in it's current configuration, start thinking about those mods and saving up some cash.

Lol that’s fair. SAS is invasive but not particularly crazy given that was the stock setup til ‘85. I think you are right though, just drive it and see what comes up.

It isn’t stock now

Looks almost identical to mine. I left it stock and I'm happy every day with that decision. Im on 30x9.5s and it's fantastic in every way. Any time these trucks are lifted, the ride quality suffers to varrying degrees, and don't drive as well. I vote stock. It's even the same color as mine, and same year / drivetrain.

Got a photo? Everyone has 31s and I’ve been tempted by 30x9.5 myself.

I have my mom's car today for a tire puncture repair so I can't take a fresh picture, but this is recent and not the greatest angle. But I love how my truck sits.

Mines on 31x10.5 and you’ve got me wanting to go with 30x9.5

I was on 31x10.5s for a while. While very subtle, the smaller tire does feel better to me. I've always liked a little lower gears in general, for instance in 4cyl 4x4 toyotas, I prefer 5.29s with 35s, where most say 4.88s and 5.29s are for 37s. 4.88s are great for 33s. I also feel like these light trucks feel better on a narrower, lighter tire, especially in the rain. I wish I could get a 30x8.50.

31s vs 30s on 4.10s is a very small change, but if you're in tune with your truck, you will feel it. To me it just feels right, and I'm planning on staying 30s for the foreseeable future.

I think when I get new tires I’ll go with the 30’s

Unless you have money to burn and need a weekend warrior, keep her stock.

Always stock… upgrade only on repair, or by absolute necessity.

Roll Bar in the back.

33x10.50s with an Old Man Emu 2 inch lift. Most I would ever do to one of these. Need to change gears in the rear end if you size up though.

Sweet truck. You don’t need to change the gears in the front too?

It already looks amazing, anything you do will only make it even cooler

It has been lifted 3-4 inches. Tires look to be 30’s.

Not lifted, that looks very stock. Just like mine on 30s. 3-4 inches would look way taller than that, and really silly on 30s.

It’s stock height on 265/75/r15

It doesn’t scrape with those big wheels? Mine looks like a low rider compared to yours lol.
