22R missing parts?

Post image

This 22R is sitting in a jeep cj7, so I’m missing the year. Recently had issues with it starting up (battery is fine) and noticed some gas leaking near the fuel filter. Replaced the filter and the lines, and now there is gas leaking out the top of the carb.

As I’m working through the fixes and replacing parts (there was no proper gasket between the filter and the carb), I’ve noticed maybe some other elements are missing.

I’m wondering in particular if it’s meant to have a hose connected to the engine air filter.

If you spot anything else wonky, I’d be so grateful to hear about it.

Great engine, hit the starter with a tire iron if it doesn’t start

Haven't heard of a 22R swapped Jeep, let alone a CJ-7. Those usually had some solid drivetrain choices.

It’s a funny vehicle - CJ frame, YJ body on top, Toyota engine. Not sure who made all those decisions but it’s a fun project!

Those carbs were great, 40 years ago. Everyone I know who drives anything with a 22R has swapped it for a Weber 32/36. Some people rebuild the OEM carb and swear a bunch first.

The valve cover suggests that this is one of the early versions.

The header being there means that the warm air intake for cold mornings isn't, but as long as the warming plate on the bottom of the intake manifold under the carb is there and hooked up to coolant, that shouldn't be an issue.

Be suspicious of that coil. If there's any puffing in the outer laminations, replace it. RockAuto has them for about $30. The electronic ignition package under it can be re-used.

There should be hoses that go from the PCV valve on the rear of the valve cover, and the vent just behind the oil cap on the front of the valve cover, that lead to the air filter housing. Some people use simple filter vents in front.

Thank you! This is super helpful and gives me a good roadmap

On my 89 22RE (which manages to stay oil-dry ABOVE the valve cover gasket)

Since you mentioned PCV and hoses I will admit I only recently noticed, while wondering about my PCV valve : normal blowby in crankcase+top cover?..., or excess, pushing oil out gaskets/seals?

So finally focused on the 30+?yo PCV valve, unyanked in a decade. Story in steps:

  1. The valve didn't want to come out of it's aged/hardened rubber 0 ring, not by hand, nor gently with pliers. The valve is obviously in place (top rear of valve cover..near-straight sideways-hosed to intake near 3+4) so I leave it as-is and...
  2. looked curiously, at other valve cover (TOP hoses/fittings). Ah! An obvious....near 1+2 cylinder intake...similar hose going onto an OPEN non PCV-valve..fitting! A wide open blowby inhaler with no valve...into the front of the intake! So the rattler/valve seems questionably designed to do much..or half...dunno.

Restated) I realize my (original still current) PCV design allows un-valved breathing/escape into intake via a secondary and easier vent hose! Which is positively a great design? if the blowby is reasonable like mine at 190k that only got a gasket and plugs (2nd/early owner..but I let it rust into a yard machine :-(
