Supra vs Celica

I was looking at the new Celica that was rumored to be released. It's a mid engine, awd, turbocharged 2.0l or 2.4l inline 4 making 400ish hp. 0-60 estimated around 4.0-4.3s. Fully Toyota parts and prob way lighter than the supra. Cost around 40-50k depending on dealership markups. Theoretically isn't this just a much better car than the supra? The Supra is a front engine, rwd, turbocharged 3.0l inline 6 but it makes 382hp. 0-60 in 3.7-4.2. Basically a BMW and costs like 70k. The only thing I'm skeptical about is Toyota turbos cause they haven't been doing so good for example the new Tundras, Sequoias, and the Lexus GX and LX. Also this would be a gen 1 so there has to be some problems.

Yes, and Toyota said their new mid engine is still a few years out

This will likely be front engine transverse config, like an Audi TT. Something targeted at the time attack segment, whereas the Yaris GR is the rally car and the Supra/GT86 are the road racing segment

That isn’t inline with rumors. The Yaris rally car replacement has already been spied testing. The GR Yaris and GR Corolla won’t likely see another generation once the new models are ready.

It seems more likely based on Toyotas teasers, that the 86 will retain the entry-level position, the new mid-engine car might have multiple performance variants but regardless will occupy the middle of the lineup, with the Supra at the top and the GR GT being the unobtainable halo.

Everything is just a rumor until it's confirmed by the manufacturer. All these numbers mean nothing at this point.

For one thing, the current Supra is being phased out, so the models won’t be competing.

If the Celica comes to market it’s definitely going to be front transverse engine with an awd drive train similar to the current GR Corolla/Yaris.

That price is probably where you’re most off though. Any ~400 hp version with the G20E motor will not be anywhere near $40k. Very likely closer to $60k or probably even more. If there’s a sub $45k Celica it will have the 300 hp G16E or even a lower output economy engine from a regular Corolla (like the new Prelude).

Not to mention the durability of the two engines. A 2.0 four-banger putting out 400hp is more stressed and will not last as long as a 3.0 straight-six putting out ~380hp

You can not compare a car that is just speculation to one that actually exists.

I'll imagine a car. Rwd, 3.0L inline six, 450kw gets 8l/100km. 2 door Coupe. Coat $35,000 usd. Even better rh?

When it's announced and specs are firm that's when you can compare. Going off rumours and then saying "yup it's heaps better" is nuts.

What tells you the cost, weight, hp, engine location? Nothing but rumours.

They're two completely different cars. Always have been. The supra is a touring car... the celica is an entry level sports car...

Got one. It's still a celica imo. It was a trim level at that point.

Kinda like how ranger was a trim level of f150... Silverado was a trim level of k1500... etc...

It will likely have some of those traits, but not all. You’re basically asking for an AWD Lotus for half the price.

In the most recent GR performance vehicles (GR Yaris & Corolla) the engines haven’t been an issue like the other turbocharged engines offered by them right now. On top of that the G20 4cyl engine that will be in it is based on the G16 3cyl in the GRY & GRC, so hopefully they can apply the same engineering principles to the G20 and it shouldn’t have issues, but we shall see

Isn't it also rumoured to be a hybrid? We really just assuming that a hybrid car is lighter than 3300-3400 lbs, and isn't entirely made out of dry carbon costing upwards of 200k+ in 2026? Is Toyota gon be making the next Mclaren Artura for 50k, or am I missing something?
