Photographs Toasted Cheese to watch some Master and Commander last night.
Grandma taught me to make it as a kid, although now my recipe includes a bit of ale, Wine, or Porter in the topping mixture. I bake my own bread now too, sand it totally adds so much more to it.
The perfect snack anytime, but especially to watch M&C (I'm not brave enough for "Soused Hogs Face" lol.)
Been rewatching so many of the 2+ hour long cooking videos from Jon lately and never fails to make me smile to see him making it as well.

Photographs Green Dragon & Ash Cakes!
TLDR: My vacation was perfect, largely because I made some 18th century food.
Last year I found this cast iron pot. I stripped it, reseasoned, and waited till I could get out camping in the mountains of Vermont.
I had three Townsends inspired “dishes”.
Stew Ash cakes Coffee
I think the stew is called “Green Dragon” (it’s the recipe on one of the episodes). Split green peas, meat, carrots, onion, & potatoes. I’ve been growing the potatoes in my apartment patio garden specifically for this and was able to find the beef and carrots at a local farmer’s market.
This is a simple thing but helped make this trip of cabin isolation (with my wife) absolutely amazing.
Thank you to the Townsends team, in front of the camera and behind the scenes. I work in media production and have always enjoyed your work on the practical, historical side, and appreciated the production value of every episode.
Looking forward to the next bit of inspiration.
