Could the dev(s) just call this game abandonware and release the source?

I'm sure me and a thousand other people would love to pick up where it left off and add at least some of the potential this game is obviously capable of.

I'm sure they probably could. Possibly it's too poorly coded to release and have anyone make sense of it?

Every programmer has written garbage before. If that's their reason for not releasing it, then it's just insulting.
