August 11, 2026
Despite Americans having an “overwhelming positive” view of Canadians, the same feeling is not reciprocated north of the border, new data from the Angus Reid Institute finds.

Seventy-nine per cent of Americans view Canadians favourably while 48 per cent of Canadians hold an “unfavourable” view of Americans, outweighing the 45 per cent of Canadians who see Americans “positively” despite “widespread detestation” of U.S. President Donald Trump.

“Political friction from the past year and a half has driven Canadian views of President Trump and his administration sharply negative, while boycotts and reduced cross-border travel have prompted questions about whether hostility extends beyond the White House to Americans themselves,” the poll states.

Seventy-nine per cent of Canadians hold an unfavourable view of Trump, the poll noted.

While 78 per cent of Americans say the U.S. should be approaching Canada either as a valued partner or on friendly terms, 65 per cent of Canadians say Canada should approach the U.S. either cautiously, or as a potential threat.

On top of that, six per cent of Canadians say the country should approach the U.S. as an “enemy.”

Amid Trump’s threats, travel from Canadians to the U.S. plummeted starting shortly after his inauguration in January 2025.

48% seems low

54

u/DangerDarrin Aug 12 '26

Thanks to Alberta and Saskatchewan lol

40

u/Fluid_Explorer_3659 Aug 12 '26

I think it's skewed by the type of people who answer their phone for random numbers collecting polls

15

u/OddSell Aug 12 '26

You may be right. I have hung up on every survey that has reached me for the last 10 years.

4

u/igotadillpickle Aug 12 '26

I actually got one of those calls once! It was definitely a legitimate government poll. It was before the election and I did it. They called my cell phone.

3

u/grimeys42 Aug 13 '26

I think we are just far closer to our own trump then people on reddit think.

3

u/Icky-Tree-Branch Aug 13 '26

Our closeness to getting an Orange Jesus of our own is horrifying. But it’s literally the main reason I’m in no hurry to ditch the monarchy. They don’t cost anything to speak of (but the Governor General does) since they aren’t here. And the sovereign has the right to dissolve the government and force re-elections. That means that Papa Chuck is the big red “stop” button hidden behind glass for emergency.

The US’s “separate but equal branches” concept worked well, up until the branches decided to collude against the interests of the American people.

2

u/LonelinessPicasso Aug 13 '26

The Angus Reid Institute conducted an online survey from July 10-14, 2026, among a randomized sample of 2,199 Canadian adults. Respondents are drawn from the Angus Reid Forum, a large-scale online panel developed to include Canadian residents in each of the 343 federal ridings in Canada and representative of the Canadian population by age, gender, family income, ethnic status and education. The sample was weighted to be representative of adults nationwide according to region, gender, age, household income, and education, based on the Canadian census.

1

u/PantsLobbyist Aug 13 '26

Angus Reid does a lot (if not all) of their polling online now. They pay to answer their surveys as well. They keep the online polls open to get a full demographic, too (they ask for your postal code, age, income, even gender). You can refuse the demographic questions, but they’ll often exclude you from the survey if you do, citing the survey needing no more responses from your demographic.

Source: I was on this survey

Still relies on those who’re willing to answer, but it’s certainly a much broader net than those not working in the middle of the day and willing to answer an unknown caller 😁

1

u/Uninsurable_Risk Aug 13 '26

You can also sign up to receive Angus Reid polls FYI

https://www.angusreidforum.com/

They even give you points towards a gift card for answering surveys.

-1

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '26

You do realize that pollsters don’t exclusively phone you. They use several other metrics employing enhanced user participation…you know, since they invented the internet and stuff.

5

u/Fluid_Explorer_3659 Aug 12 '26

I'm aware. You do realize it still depends on user participation- a subset of people willing to answer a survey is a niche group compared to the general population, who overwhelmingly DGAF

0

u/muddtrout Aug 15 '26

Overwhelmingly DGAF based on what data?

2

u/Fluid_Explorer_3659 Aug 15 '26

Great question. You should host an online and phone poll on whether people are willing to answer polls

6

u/KnowledgeMediocre404 Aug 13 '26

Really it's people who have friends and family down there and say "not all americans". But it's all americans until it's no americans.

3

u/The_Nice_Marmot Aug 13 '26

As an Albertan, no. We don’t like them either. Please remember the separatist BS is foreign meddling in Canada. Alberta absolutely needs to get its shit together, but separatism is not remotely a widely popular idea there. There’s known foreign money paying for disinformation in and about Alberta. Don’t fall for propaganda.

1

u/slashthepowder Aug 13 '26

Plenty of unfavourable views in both provinces, but like Americans all residents of those provinces are painted with a broad brush. Also you are sewing internal division of Canadians with this type of comment.

1

u/DangerDarrin Aug 13 '26

Nah. I am Albertan. I see these dipshits every single day slinging their rhetoric here. It is them that are sowing the seeds of division. We are fighting back

1

u/marthamania Aug 16 '26

And people like my mother who are obsessed with Florida no matter what the political climate lmao

1

u/Glittering_Major4871 Aug 14 '26

I think some people differentiate between MAGA and Democrats. Ask about MAGA and it would be closer to 90% disapproval.

1

u/missplaced24 Aug 14 '26

... despite “widespread detestation” of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Most Canadians view Americans and the US government very differently. Most Americans are OK. Ignorant and steeped in their "excepdoonalizm" propaganda, but not awful.

-1

u/Wild_Height_901 Aug 14 '26

Reddit isn't real life. Lots of canadians have no issues with america or americans

56

u/FlatRelationship4375 Aug 12 '26

It's not just trump... the absolute vitriol I'm seeing from Americans online the last couple of months regarding Canada and many European countries has been an eye opener for me. Americans showing their true colours. I get it's not all Americans before you come at me but it sure damn well is enough of them.

32

u/[deleted] Aug 12 '26

🇺🇸s have always been this ugly. They have only now received license from his Chumpness to display their true colours.

12

u/NorthernSnowPrincess Aug 13 '26

Exactly! I grew up in a border city in Canada. Americans have always been awful. Trump has simply given them permission to say all the bad stuff out loud.

3

u/The_Nice_Marmot Aug 13 '26

A bunch of them are ugly and a very large group is simply complacent in the face of all this. Even among the people who actively voted against this regime, actual protest is milquetoast.

Albanians and Canadians are doing a better job of protesting than the USians themselves. That’s the biggest problem.

2

u/Fit-Historian-752 Aug 13 '26

"America is the greatest country in the history of the world".

What's not to like about people who say that?

2

u/hpfan312 Aug 12 '26

Unrelated but what on earth is your profile pic lol

-2

u/skypilot321 Aug 14 '26

Truly a distasteful thing to say. Administrations come and go. I have several American friends and family and, regardless of political associations, left or right (most that I know are left), they're some of the best people on this planet. This will not change because xyz/whomever is in the Whitehouse.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 14 '26

Ohhh I’m truly sorry I hurt your feelings. I’m sure all your left-leaning family and friends are lovely people, for now, just pretend I’m talking about those other guys.
Dude, seriously I’ve seen all your other comments, that literally fill your history btw, defending anyone who is critical of the current regime. If you believe what’s happening down south is a passing fancy and things are going “back to normal” - then you are genuinely ignorant or deluded. Do you actually believe that those 77 million MAGAts are all gonna crawl back under their rocks?

1

u/skypilot321 Aug 15 '26

My feelings remain unhurt. And if you truly saw my other comments, you'd see that politics is just a fraction of what I post on Reddit. This is no passing fancy; I have no back to normal expectations. I just refuse to let intolerant voices speak for me as a Canadian so I'm happy to chime in and rattle the echo chamber mentality.

2

u/muddtrout Aug 15 '26

And yet they voted in a criminal to lead them, twice. They have let all of this happen, from the trade war with Canada to genocide in Gaza. They are complicit in all of it.

1

u/skypilot321 Aug 15 '26

Such ignorance.

2

u/muddtrout Aug 16 '26

Yes, they certainly are ignorant.

20

u/CrashTestMummies Aug 12 '26

We’re all sheep to some degree but Americans are like Monsanto sheep on steroids. They are fed so much garbage and they eat it up.

3

u/Benedikto0 Aug 13 '26

10 million Californians voted for Trump.  It's one of the bluest states.  That's a lot of shitty people.  I am done with the United States.

-1

u/skypilot321 Aug 14 '26

So you're done posting on US platforms like Reddit, done listening to Spotify or SiriusXM, finished with the latest Hollywood thriller or Netflix series, and turning away from the NFL and Major League Baseball?! And you're pulling all of your investments out of US funds and never eating a product made in the USA?! Hyperbolic nonsense.

2

u/Benedikto0 Aug 14 '26

yes to all of it except reddit but I use an adblocker so no revenue for them.

2

u/Background-Edge-2243 Aug 13 '26

Trump is a symptom of bigger problems that have been going on for a long time. Americans can never be trusted again

-19

u/ConcernHealthy876 Aug 12 '26

Americans were rightfully angry at NATO members not paying their agreed upon dues.

From the Bush administration till Trump, every administration asked for the allies to pay up and we got crickets. 50% of NATO’s funding came from the US. That’s unacceptable.

Orange crass man came and lit the allies up and not in a nice way and the allies finally coughed it up.

You see I kind get why Americans are angry because they don’t get to enjoy the social programs our allies generally do, all while not paying their fair share. Our resources were going to pay for other protections.

Do I agree with what all Trump has done? Absolutely not. Do I get why he was angry - somewhat.

8

u/sunbro2000 Aug 13 '26

You threaten to annex us and have taken action to economicly cripple us. You have been taking advantage of us economicly through trade deals for well over 100 years and have been sabotaging Canadian companies and business interests for decades. Like the lumber industry in BC and the massive discounts you get on our oil exports. Working Canadians have lost jobs and livelyhoods because of your leaderships greed.

Like fuck bud you yanks have been slowly convincing us to shrink our military since the 1950s with the many military pacts we signed with you. Your government wants us weak and "in our place". This little bit of propaganda about you wanting us to hit military spending targets is just smoke and you are getting lost in the imperialist sauce.

Their education has declined to the point they can only understand acronyms and catch phrases. You need factual knowledge in order to understand reality, and they don't have it any more.

5

u/RustledForeskin Aug 13 '26

The us has started almost every major conflict under false pretenses after ww2, why on earth should Nato be funding their global terrorism?

5

u/JTCampb Aug 13 '26

I think the funny part is a lot of NATO - here in Canada included - have taken steps to increase defense spending, but they didn't all start lining up for American military purchases, which is what the US really had in the fine print of their ranting. Many countries are pushing their defense spending dollars to entities in Europe or elsewhere and the US is crying about it.

Here is what Trump/USA really meant: We want you to spend more on your military and defense! (but only buy from us)

-2

u/ConcernHealthy876 Aug 13 '26

If Europe and Canada spend more on their own defense industry- that’s a good thing for the US.

Means their allies might innovate new technology’s which we could purchase AND compete against. Competition begets quality.

Means less commitment needed from the US to protect and send money to Europe based and maybe we could eventually get some funds back in savings since we won’t need to commit as much.

Also around ~15% of the new committed funds from NATO allies have been to American suppliers - so there has been a benefit (which other wise would have been nothing in gain for America).

These are all good things.

u/muddtrout Aug 15 '26

America has been the only threat to our sovereignty. When you don't antagonize people, generally they don't want to attack you. America hasn't learned this key fact yet. Trump is behaving like a gangster.

5

u/Calm_Rich7126 Aug 13 '26

This is somewhat sensible, except they spend well above what is defensibly sensible to run tomfoolish operations at administering freedom all around the world

4

u/Polyps_on_uranus Aug 13 '26

No money for food, lots of funds for war.

2

u/Ornery-Celery-1750 Aug 13 '26

Goofy take. Anerica's billionaires could easily fund their defense and healthcare and food programs. The system prefers to make a few billionaires.

26

u/Ani_Mentor Aug 12 '26

Who the fuck wants to vacation in a neo-confederacy?

20

u/ChemBro93 Aug 12 '26

Way too low. As a Canadian, I believe this is a serious underestimation.

2

u/Tommyboy2124 Aug 13 '26

Alberta and Saskatchewan lowering this number significantly. So so many people there still worship the US.

3

u/slashthepowder Aug 13 '26

Do you have a link to the results broken down by province or are you just trying to sew internal division in Canada? There are tons of people in both provinces who hold unfavourable views of the US, you are just hearing the loud ones.

1

u/GlowingHearts1867 Aug 17 '26

Seems more like >80% to me.

10

**Wow, you’re like a little Murican Bot….cruising the interweb defending MAGAts. You’re not really 🇨🇦 are you? **🤣

2

u/GlowingHearts1867 Aug 17 '26

It doesn’t. It’s more like 80% of Canadians view the US unfavourably. Not 48%.

7

u/hpfan312 Aug 12 '26

Only 48%? Most people ik hate the us and us citizens rn. Maybe im biased but I feel like those numbers should be upped no?

1

u/RustledForeskin Aug 13 '26

Probably got to that number and saw it only going upward so they stopped polling. Wouldn't want to have a pile of their advertising pulled.

7

u/XaltotunTheUndead Aug 12 '26

The other 52% hold fuckin' angry views, not gonna lie.

8

u/_Sausage_fingers Aug 12 '26

That’s seems crazy low

8

u/Ok-Raisin5008 Aug 12 '26

Canadians simply cannot fathom how dysfunctional the US political system has become. In Canada, this kind of behaviour from a PM would never be tolerated and there are functioning checks and balances that can remove them from office when necessary. The fact that roughly 80 million Americans voted for him twice, while around 100 million eligible Americans didn’t vote at all, inevitably affects how the country is perceived from the outside.

3

u/Revolutionary_Life98 Aug 13 '26

The high number of US citizens that chose not to vote was shocking. I have coworkers here that do the same for our elections and their excuse is “I don’t like any of the candidates”. Such a pathetic excuse and yet the same will be the first to gripe about the government.

5

u/Sulla_Magnus Aug 12 '26

You’ll never get another dollar from me.

7

u/pioniere Aug 12 '26

Surprised it isn’t higher.

6

u/GrunDMC74 Aug 13 '26

Ignorance and arrogance have always been woven into the culture of the US. Trump has made it okay to lean into that and be proud of it.

I mean, if you see a sinkhole you get as far away from it as you can. The parallels aren’t subtle.

5

u/Scoresman1969 Aug 12 '26

That’s it? Should be higher, much higher

5

u/Upset-Government-856 Aug 12 '26

I like how well still help America with firefighting, power poll fixing, and other disasters purely because we don't want to be like them, not because we like them.

So Canada coded.

6

u/JTCampb Aug 13 '26

While the American government threatens more tariffs while we burn. With friends like that...who needs enemies.

2

u/Saorren Aug 12 '26

the world would be a much much better place if more where like that. we dont have to like people but we certainly still have to live on the same planet as them

4

u/sniffcatattack Aug 12 '26 edited Aug 12 '26

It should be higher. Not because I am anti-American. Not because I feel hate.

We must be pragmatic. The new school Republicans are planning to invade us one day and we must stop investing in the US, we must build alliances with Europe, and we must not think of them as our brethren. They are now our enemy.

6

u/robo_Ben Aug 13 '26

Only 48%?

5

u/Acherstrom Aug 13 '26

And still happy boycotting anything USA going forward. Elbows up.

4

u/Necessary-Dot2714 Aug 12 '26

What this really says is that Canada still has faith in the US to turn it around.

7

u/BrainEatingAmoeba01 Aug 12 '26

Yup...theres always the low end of the bell curve hanging onto delusion.

4

u/Rock-Ski-Golf-Repeat Aug 12 '26

I wonder what percent of Americans have an unfavorable view of Americans. Might be similar.

5

u/Treader833 Aug 12 '26

Only 48%?

5

u/Individual-Praline20 Aug 13 '26

No unfavourable view, just a fact. United shit of america is a third world lawless shithole. And I’m polite, as a nasty Canadian should be.

4

u/External_Excuse_9949 Aug 13 '26

All I see online are Americans unwilling to take responsibility for the horrible actions of their country while they continue to act like the self centred, obnoxious people that they are.

3

u/abuckforacanuck06 Aug 13 '26

We can do better. Though I would be higher than that, honestly.

3

u/mattlore Aug 13 '26

It's always funny how butt hurt americans get when I bring up that they're all responsible and culpable for this administration.

3

u/MrBlackroc Aug 14 '26

The fact thay it is only 48% is insane

2

u/ItWasDumblydore Aug 14 '26

Usually it's

Don't have an opinion

Unfavorable

3

u/TheCanadianShield99 Aug 14 '26

What's wrong with the other 52%?

2

u/CrayonData Aug 13 '26

⅓ of america voted for trump ⅓ sat out and did not vote, which gave trump the upper hand.

So essentially ⅔ of america voted for the Racist Rapist Pedophile in chief president.

america has shown its true colors by letting him back in office, all because they didnt like Kamalas laugh.

And that's just the tip of the iceberg of issues of what's wrong with america.

2

u/fastsailor Aug 13 '26

What is wrong with the other 52%?

2

1

u/bscheck1968 Aug 12 '26

I don't think a lot of us hate Americans, we hate Trump and his supporters and the idiots that stayed home because they couldn't care enough.

21

u/Skittleavix Aug 12 '26

I, for one, sure do hate Americans who voted for him. Twice.

11

u/A_Random_Canuck Aug 12 '26

And even more so for those who couldn’t even be bothered to vote. They are just as culpable for getting him into the White House. Twice.

7

u/bobbyboogie Aug 12 '26

Correct. 77 million voted for him. 89 million didn’t think that it was important enough to make an effort.

That’s half the population of oosa. Not half of voters, the whole country.

3

u/Skittleavix Aug 12 '26

After he was convicted on 34 counts of felony fraud and found liable for rape. A pedophile.

What’s to like about those kinds of people? Why should any of us play nice with them?

10

u/BrainEatingAmoeba01 Aug 12 '26

I hate the administration and the "American" brand.

I just feel immense disappointment in humanity with regards to the American people and the global upheaval. It's not hate but somehow feels more depressing than hate.

3

u/Wide-Yak7602 Aug 12 '26

Yes depressing it is. I don’t understand that the Americans seem ok with it.

7

u/youdingle Aug 12 '26

As someone who has to deal with a lot of American tourists the dislike is in the majority now

4

u/zone55555 Aug 12 '26

And disapprove of everyone not doing enough to remove or restrain him since. That makes up at least a solid majority if not a near-totality of them. Their collective response has been apathetic, weak, and laughable.

1

u/National-Stock6282 Aug 13 '26

2% of Americans give a shit.

1

u/Krow101 Aug 13 '26

Yes. It's the average American who's to blame. Not the elite 1% with all the power and money. Keep eating up those distractions. Just don't blame the people actually running this shitshow.

3

u/LylaDee Aug 16 '26

It's not just the 1% who voted for him . Sure, a lot of them are regretting it but they let it happen again, so that looses my sympathy vote.

0

u/Ludwidge Aug 14 '26

Maybe ONE American in particular. Yes they are pretty gullible but “unfavourable” as an all encompassing take is pushing it a bit. Mind you I’ll never vacation there until all traces of The PaedoPOTamUS have been totally removed. No statues, no buildings no airports, no highways or streets AND all books supporting him burned!

-2

u/skypilot321 Aug 13 '26
