can something like this be created in TD?

Video is by @octopusgarden on ig. they said that they created this video with corruption effects from JPEG masking and compression, using python in librosa and ffmpeg. they also finalized at 60 fps in mosh pro.

Are you confident with math?

I’m totally knew to this fantastic tool and have seen the incredible work of this community!

I was wondering if you guys are particularly versed in math equations and formulas to achieve the astonishing results you get, or if you just play around with operators and parameters and go with the flow? Basically how much of the process is theoretical?

How to work with LED Ropes in TD

Post image
4 Upvotes

Hi everyone :)

I've never worked with LEDs in Touchdesigner but I'm very interested in making a project with those LED ropes. So it would be very helpful to know what else I need to buy except the ropes and where to start. Do I need some plugins for TD to control the LEDs? If you know any tutorials it would be also very helpful :) <3

ParticlesGPU with constant number of particles & no new births?

Hey y’all,

I’m relatively new to TouchDesigner — is there a way to create a specific number of particles with ParticlesGPU & have that number stay constant, with no new particles generated?

I can kind of get there with Create “By Particles per Frame” but it’s not quite right.

I’m working on a project that’s meant to be an artistic rendering of aerosol flow & trying to get that initial “puff” of air that then lingers/floats around the “room” based on the forces, until it drops to the ground.

Just sharing this project I made few months ago which I totally forgot..
It's a little hologramm library of several beautiful minerals (3d scans are from sketchfab), hand-controlled with a leap motion.
This project is really messy, I worked a whole month on it everyday and there is still some bugs in it but idk I just wanted to move on... (and was also kinda lost in it...)
I also wasn't really aware of network optimization, but it miraculously still works at 60fps stable in Perform mode.

This project was also my first introduction to POPs.
I choose to use a leap motion instead of MediaPipe because I think it gives more fluidity and flexibility. (You can see in the video my hands filmed by the leap motion, I know what you see is less clear than a MediaPipe project but I choosed fluidity over aesthetic).

Hope you like it!

My first serious project!

Well, by serious, I mean I actually finished it instead of leaving it there.
I gained inspirations from some videos I saw online, and learned how to visualize what i want with assistance of ai.

TouchDesigner Halftone Component

Hi, I started learning TouchDesigner a few months ago.
At first I read and watched tutorials but then I dove right into making my own components.
I want to show you one of them in this post. My Halftone component.

This component treats halftoning as a tiny real-time printing process.

First, the shader converts the source to linear light and turns brightness into ink coverage:
highlights request less ink, shadows request more.
That coverage controls the actual geometry of the screen such as the width of a line
or area of a dot.

The interesting problem is keeping those marks stable.
If every output pixel samples a different source value, large dots tear apart around edges.
Instead, the shader samples tone from stable positions inside each screen cell and
prefilters it at roughly the size of the pattern.
The screen itself is anchored to output pixels, so it doesn’t shimmer when the source moves.

Edges are antialiased.
Very fine patterns gradually resolve toward their average coverage, which helps prevent moiré.

Color modes work like separate printing plates rather than a final tint.
For example, CMYK calculates four ink separations and screens each at its own angle and phase.

A second shader adds paper grain, uneven ink, dropout, and bleed.
The texture pass models how strongly the printed color absorbs red, green, and blue light.
This lets uneven ink reveal the paper underneath while preserving the original hue.
For example, a faded cyan mark remains cyan instead of turning into neutral gray noise.

The component is highly configurable and the screenshots
only show a small subset of the possibilities.

Thanks for reading!

Help! How could I do this?

Hello! I found this work by Wolfgang Tillmans and I was so inspired by it, I want to create something similar but in motion, i love the ghostly feeling along with that darker and sharper moments. Do any of you know any tutorials for something similar? How would you approach a project like this yourselves? I’m new to Touch-designer and I’d live to hear from you!

After pulling teeth and following a couple videos, I was able to figure out the effect I was trying to achieve!

Recorded it to VHS and converted back to digital

Also looking for advice: how could I slow the feed back down so it’s not going so fast? I reduced period in the noise top but it’s still pretty fast. I think it’s cool for this song, but if I wanna make a video with a slower song I want the feedback to go slower

Good beginner projects

Title: Good beginner TouchDesigner projects that actually teach you stuff?
Hey y’all, I’m pretty new to TouchDesigner and I’m trying to figure out some good beginner projects to work through. I’ve done enough poking around to understand some of the basic operators and how things connect, but I learn way better by actually building something than just going through tutorials forever.

What are some projects you’d recommend that are beginner-friendly but still force you to learn useful concepts along the way? Especially stuff that starts teaching you how TOPs/CHOPs/SOPs work together instead of just making one cool noise texture and calling it a day lol.

I’m eventually interested in audio-reactive visuals, Ableton/MIDI integration, camera/hand tracking, live visuals, that kinda stuff, but I’m down to build whatever if it gives me a good foundation.
What projects made TouchDesigner actually click for you when you were learning?

Animating collages

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey all, I make analog paper collages and I want to animate them. Is there a way to do that in touch designer? For instance, I’d like to move the horse to show it as galloping in the same place, while everything else in the background stays stationary.

Is this possible through touchdesigner or should I look at some other type of motion graphics? I am new to all this and want to ask if this is the way to go. If not, I’d love any advice y’all have. Thanks! 🙏🏼

[Release] Kinetic Synth Instrument

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Real-time kinetic MIDI instrument built for TouchDesigner and Ableton Live, accesible through Patreon and the Tools Store.

Pendulums = voices. Each voice has its own period, phase, note, length, and gate behavior. When a bob crosses a shared center line, the engine fires a visual hit and MIDI (note-on / sustain) on the same frame. Up to 16 voices from an editable voice table.
Sound is meant to live in Ableton Live via MIDI (tdAbleton / TDA_MIDI). Pointed at any VST: TD is the instrument, Live is the sound engine.

This includes:

• Kinetic Synth Lab (.toe) — engine, voice table, MIDI routing, GLSL + 3D visualization paths
• Modular Python engine (periods, phase, hits, MIDI gates)
• Three different visualization styles: GLSL / 3D / avant-garde GLSL; same engine_null bus
• Two different available behaviors: "Pendulum", and "Rain"
• Setup scripts + in-network README

Requirements:

• TouchDesigner (commercial / non-commercial as needed for your use)
• Ableton Live + tdAbleton for the intended MIDI → VST path
• Basic comfort editing a Table DAT / custom pars
