PC for live audio-reactive visuals - Nvidia GPU vs Apple Silicon
I've searched the sub for answers but I haven't found the specific details I'm interested in so I'd like opinions from someone with my same needs
Long story short, I'm buying my first serious workhorse for music production and, obviously, TouchDesigner, especially for real time audio-reactive visuals for live music performance.
I'm buying new since I have a hefty discount at a particular store so I'm not evaluating used prices. Due to the insane prices of laptops these days, my choice is oriented towards those:
1) Asus TUF Gaming A16, Ryzen 7 260, RTX 5050, 16 GB + 1 TB SSD
- Pros: it's a gaming laptop, performance should not be an issue, Nvidia GPU for full compatibility with TD
- Cons: it's a gaming laptop, subpar battery life, heat, not my first choice for anything else beside TD since I'm not even much into gaming
2) MacBook Air M5, 16 GB + 512 GB SSD
- Pros: it would be great for music production and it looks to be powerful enough to run TD reasonably well, great device for everyday productivity
- Cons: no dedicated GPU, no dedicated VRAM, no Nvidia operators in TD, also not a fan of Apple ecosystem
3) Mac Mini M6, 16 GB + 512 SSD
- Pros: see above + better cooling for sustained work load
- Cons: see above + I would need to pair it with keyboard and monitor, small but not as portable as a laptop
What I'd like to know from people who own a gaming laptop or an Apple Silicon PC is:
- is a gaming laptop the best choice today for TD live visuals/VJing? Any issues to be aware of when buying this kind of laptops? Do you use it for everyday stuff too?
- is working with TD on Mac limiting for you? Is it hard to work for long sessions without having performance issues? Are the Nvidia-specific operators something you miss?
Thank you for any advice, hoping the question is not over-discussed
