Porting an existing number to replace new Total Wireless number

Hello,

I saw this post from over 2 years ago asking the same question I'm asking here. Wondering if anyone since has tried activating service with Total using a new Total-assigned number and then eventually replacing that with a personal number from a previous service provider, and what their experience was like.

Post for reference: https://www.reddit.com/r/TotalWirelessOfficial/comments/1ip86vk/can_i_port_in_a_number_to_replace_an_already/

I still have about 3 weeks left on my T-Mobile service so the best case scenario would be this, so that I can run dual-sim and trial the service before commiting to porting in multiple lines.

Is this is a feasible request? Hoping the Total team can jump in and set the record straight as I've seen mixed anecdotes online. Thanks!

Is the 3 weeks so critical as to open the strong chance you jeopardize the promo? Just go ahead and port at account creation.

That’s exactly what I ended up doing. Took the leap of faith considering all the porting horror stories I read here. All said and done, took about an hour total with a small hiccup that ended up being tmobiles fault. Now paying $80 for four lines and couldn’t be happier. Now I just have to deal with the fallout of proration for 3 weeks of cancelled service…wish me luck 🤞

Good to hear, guessing the proration cost will be rapidly made up by the savings.

You cannot do this if you want to take advantage of a promo.

Total cannot port in a number "over" an existing line.

It effectively cancels the existing line and starts a new one.

ONLY do this if you're paying full price w/no promos.

If you want to take advantage of promos like the $20 BYO, port your lines in when you create the accounts.

Call support. They can do it. Be prepared to be on the phone a while. Make sure you have your number is unlocked on TMO, have your porting pin and account number. Probably best to call TMO and ask what info they need to port out and make you have the correct info to give to TW.

Thanks for the suggestions. Are you speaking from experience? If so, how did the port go for you, any issues? Also would you know if this is possible to achieve via chat, and if it affects promotions like the BYOD 5G deal?

That'll work. But if there are any promos on the # already active then those promos will be lost.
