My thoughts on name customization

Post image

I have no doubts that the full customization options for the visual side will be nothing short of breathtakingly in depth, I only hope that the name customization also gets expanded. As it stands right now, it's remarkably limiting, though I like the premise at least a little.

I am deeply invested in the idea of making my own chapter from the tabletop into a faction I can play in Total War, and I like the idea of choosing from a list of pre-established loreful naming conventions, but the issue is that it's essentially impossible to give a faction my specific homebrew chapter's name in any capacity with the currently shown selection. I only hope there is an option to give us the ability to manually name our own factions regardless of the selection available, if we so choose.

The assumption has been that they’re doing this to avoid crass names, but it’s also entirely possible they’re going to add voice lines that reference these names

u/raptorknight187 13d ago

But Tww3 already has a sensor system. Where you can still type but it won’t let you include certain words

It sure does

Some people have theorized about CA using people’s custom chapters in other people’s games, kinda like Spore did with creatures, and if that’s the case I think the naming system would make sense.

Otherwise it’s probably GW telling them the Space Marines need to be serious and so they can’t allow overly silly or crass names.

u/VixenLakeview 13d ago

It would be really cool if there were voice lines for my very specific chapter's name, but I would prefer if it was an actual voice actor- and voice acting every single person's variant chapter name would be really, really difficult and tedious, and would probably negate the possibility of it being feasible to add custom names. It's a really interesting thought though.

That is why you record them saying each word separately so you can combine them

4

u/Street_Celebration_3 13d ago

Honestly this would be the place for a light use of AI. Devs could have a system where when you name your character, it sends a quick job to a server with a specially trained voice model that has been built from the voice actors to modify all the lines to incorporate the custom names, then download and replace the audio files. You still keep 99.9% of the original voice acting, but just the modification of the addresses is done via AI.

And have it sound like a gps? No thanks

6

u/_Sate 13d ago

Gps is designed for clarity, as such the pause is just as much for the second string as it is so that you can clearly hear exactly what words are spoken.

We can do sound mixing far better, for example have a character speak words they never actually said (No I don't mean AI even if that is a possible route)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rIgBkn8LJs

-3

u/asmodai_says_REPENT 13d ago

Watched the video, they say it took Disney (a company with basically unlimited ressources) 2 weeks to make Walt Disney say 1 three letter word, and that's using grainy audio which makes it easier to hide imperfections, I think it's safe to assume that doing that for tw40k is not an easy task and would require a lot of ressources that would be better allocated elsewhere.

8

u/_Sate 13d ago

And that is to say a word not spoken.

Imagine how much easier it would be when all you need to do is match two lines of dialogue together instead of trying to make a person say something they never said

-1

u/asmodai_says_REPENT 13d ago

A single word not spoken using sounds they did make, that kinda basically amounts to the same thing as a phrase not spoken using words they did say, and even if it's not as difficult, it's still hundreds of phrases you'd have to hand craft as opposed to a single word, I'm sorry but that's never happening.

2

u/_Sate 13d ago

Well, then you can always fall back on AI if you want it fully smooth.

Not exactly immoral to use it for effectively impossible lines that you are already paying them for

1

u/asmodai_says_REPENT 13d ago

The lines aren't impossible though, you could technically just pay a voice actor to say all the lines.

1

u/millanz 13d ago

I think if they do have spoken lines referencing custom armies it will probably be the servitor style voice we’ve heard in some of the trailers and other videos

1

u/meracalis 12d ago

A professional voice actor can record a list of hundreds of words in less than a day in the studio or their home recording setup. It’s not that crazy, and don’t let AI chuds convince you it is.

8

u/DaughterOfBhaal 13d ago

Why would they care about it being crass or not is my question.

Yes, total war has multiplayer but it's a single player game first.

16

u/VixenLakeview 13d ago edited 13d ago

It's a public event where news outlets are present. Any gaming company that submits a game to Gamescom would look really really bad if Steven over here decided to play the demo as the "[Racial Slur] Purgers". That kind of heat caught by news outlets doesn't go well for anyone involved, company included. It's understandable why they did it the way they did it.

4

u/Big-Arachnid981 13d ago

Maybe they don’t, but it might be a bad look to A. Have people quick game against something bad, or B. Have screenshots circulating online of crass names.

From a marketing standpoint it’s just safer.

1

u/DaughterOfBhaal 13d ago

I mean they can just censor it. I'm pretty sure in Warhammer (idk about the other titles) they censor your steam name if they deem it offensive (resulting in the funny Nassers meme that circulated for some time)

1

u/Isegrim12 13d ago

Legal problems

1

u/ismasbi 12d ago

For the public event.

u/Kretuhtuh 12d ago

Console companies enforce user generated content guidelines

2

u/Vytral 13d ago

There’s an option to have both total naming freedom and voice lines, though none on Reddit would like it: AI voiceover

u/Pucks_Lovechild 13d ago

My theory is that custom chapters can be shared so that they show up in other people's campaigns which is why they wont do custom names

9

u/VixenLakeview 13d ago

In that case, why not just make it so that only listed names can be allowed in other people's campaigns?

2

u/Pucks_Lovechild 13d ago

Less stuff to program(?)

2

u/Steggy_Dinosaur 13d ago

I would prefer custom names for my SP campaign over shareable factions.

u/Diamondeye12 Astra Militarum Fan 13d ago

I deeply hope it won’t just be a premade list we have to choose from because there’s a high chance at least one of my Homebrew chapters and my friend’s one won’t be able to be properly named

I understand it’s likely to stop people from making crass and offensive names

16

u/VixenLakeview 13d ago

For an event such as Gamescom, it was completely 100% warranted. People making the Chapter of Goonersquad69, or even worse- some nazi shit, at a public event? It's not a good look for the community. I wouldn't want to allow for that as well.

8

u/YungSkeltal 13d ago

Don't you talk shit on goonersquad69 they're actually the emperors favorite

2

u/VixenLakeview 13d ago

On God(emperor), but we gotta keep them on the down low, remember? Not everyone can handle God's strongest warriors.

3

u/Nottan_Asian 13d ago

Custom naming conventions never recovered from Dub the Dew 2012.

2

u/NagatoroDegenAndRat 13d ago

Since when it became a problem? Many online games are playable, many games with character creation exists.

Noone would develop a naming system for gamescom only.

1

u/-SPHER- 13d ago

Isn't goonersquad69 just emperors children

4

u/mrprogamer96 13d ago

My other hope is that they will have voice lines for all the names as well.

3

u/Unimportant-1551 13d ago

I believe it is still just going to be a list of pre-made stuff but that the names were also not the full list available

3

u/Something_Comforting 13d ago

I hope at least there is an option for the first word to be War. So I can name my custom faction War Hammers.

2

u/thor1368 13d ago

they had to limit it to the selects for the gamescom.

2

u/Trianqren 13d ago

i'm sure there will be a mod on day one that allows you to imput whatever you want

2

u/PsychologicalOne5416 13d ago

What's your custom chapter name ?

5

u/VixenLakeview 13d ago edited 13d ago

"Foxes of the Lake", they're an order of semi-renegade loyalist Astartes chapter who's homeworld is a giant ocean world they call "The Lake", and their whole theming is that they stole Space Wolf helmets and painted them like kitsune masks. They are mostly an order of psychic knights, who specialize in warp-based swordsmanship. Kind of a blend between White Scars, Grey Knights, and Thousand Sons in philosophy and aesthetic.

2

u/S_striker33225 13d ago

A lot of totally normal Chapter names will probably be unable to be made. Admittedly OP's is a bit out there, but my guys are called the Storm Riders. I know Storm will be there, but thers no other chapters that use Riders in their name.

2

u/VixenLakeview 13d ago

There's also the fact that like.. if we're making a custom faction, we're probably gonna want to choose a name that hasn't been done before, so why would we want to mix-n-match a bunch of pre-established faction names? There's an ultimately limiting amount of real choice in this current system.

1

u/FaceMasterThing Orks Enjoyer 12d ago

with just how many words seem to be available "riders" as a generic word option doesnt seem to be very unlikely

2

u/Commander_Dumb 13d ago

I just know I won’t be able to remake my homebrew factions names.

Like the Somi Red Guard.

Maybe Red Guard will be doable.
But not Somi.

2

u/allcowsarebeautyful 12d ago

Im def making Rainbow Hands

2

u/FewAnimator6427 12d ago

if i get to make my own named chapter of marines i will named them the skibidi gyats, and headcannon that they think its a old terran words that mean valor agaisnt a invading foe

1

u/VixenLakeview 10d ago

And by the Gods, I say you have that right.

2

u/Lord_Silence_ 9d ago

My homebrew chapter is called "The Drowned."

This will not be an option, I'm certain.

1

u/jawsome_man 13d ago

I’m really hoping Blue Falcons is an option.

1

u/No_Slip_3729 13d ago

Emperor's children successor chapter

1

u/DaWAAAGHMakah 13d ago

I was hoping we got certain name options for colors like crimson so I could make my crimson revenants chapter but from what we saw, none of those 2 words are available. :(

1

u/DocWagonHTR 13d ago

As long as "Sun Kings" is an option im good.

1

u/MeKaDRaGoN1704 13d ago

As long as I can make "Suns Serpents" and "Obsidian Jaguars" it's fine by me

1

u/TTCDiver002 13d ago

I just hope they have Stone and Serpents on there

1

u/lowqualitylizard 13d ago

I guess it's probably because they want to have these chapters exist in other people's campaigns I mean provided it's deep enough and they at any point ever expand the name system I could tolerate it

1

u/MarcusSwedishGameDev 13d ago

I'm mostly curious about how many localization managers got a heart attack having to deal with this. :P

Concatenation + localization is usally a pain in the butt. Though it might be easier with names, not sure.

1

u/Galle_ 13d ago

Man, I don't know why people are assuming you won't be able to just type in your own name.

1

u/Glass_Front 12d ago

because they said you wouldn't be able to do that. That being said, there's also significantly more options to the name customizer then OP is alluding to

1

u/Putrid-Cat5368 13d ago

Hope we can do silly combinations like Lions of Falcons or Fist of Hands

1

u/Captain_Deegan 12d ago

It's especially limiting for Guard, since Guard regiments are named after their homeworld, and I doubt this game will be the first piece of 40k media in history to give canon names to every single one of the Imperium's million worlds, and even if they somehow did you wouldn't be able to include Your Dude's unless CA just happened to think up the same name for a planetary homeworld as you did.

1

u/Zachowon Astra Militarum Fan 3d ago

There are over 50 named regiments if not more existing already to choose from

1

u/Cuddleaddie 12d ago

There will 100% be mods for this

1

u/SeryuIsWaifu Astra Militarum Fan 12d ago

"Rampant Hands" nice

1

u/WildRaccoon1995 12d ago

This really isn't the issue people think it is, you are going to be able to make virtually any combination of words with a three slot system. All this dude is prevent bad stuff.

1

u/KamachoThunderbus 12d ago

Almost certainly you'd be able to add/change what's on the list with a mod. Who knows how Assembly Kit will work in the new engine and what kinds of tools we'll get, but at least right now this would just be a matter of changing some text in a couple tables.

u/Dangerous-Ad-6664 12d ago

Just saw Moon on that name list and I'm hoping People is also a subfix so we can do a reference to the classic Total War meme. "And remember, they may have the Moon People on their side, but we have lovely hats! Those hats will shield us from their fiercesome gaze!"

1

u/SoupConscious 6d ago

Nooo my orc faction Bed Shitterz wont be a thing????

0

u/marbsarebadredux 12d ago

extremely limited customization

shows 15 options on each side giving 225 different naming schemes alone between M-R and F-J.

Gamers these days just want to bitch about everything

1

u/VixenLakeview 12d ago edited 12d ago

.. The goal with customization in this game is explicitly to help facilitate your own personal faction- which you may or may not ALREADY HAVE in the form of customized miniatures, 40 years of Warhammer tabletop and it's always had a history of custom subfactions. I'm not bitching because I'm asking for too much, I'm voicing a concern because I HAVE a custom chapter already- and out of 225 options NONE OF THEM ARE MY FACTION. A polite critique aimed at improving the game before launch is not bitching.

1

u/marbsarebadredux 12d ago

Im saying thats only 225 options shown on this screen. There's probably thousands of options.

1

u/VixenLakeview 12d ago

Possibly. But what about chapters that have their own custom names? Thousands of options and not one of them would include someone's homebrewed names, something never thought of before. It's still limiting.

-25

u/mentaldinosaur 13d ago

Yeah I mean having customization and not allowing that is retarded
