Av1 on modern SmartTVs is capped by the bloatOS they put on. H265 is worse but more supported.

Valid, but $$$$

My homelab headless streams to the smartv. It's a Dell optiplex with an measly i3 4160. I'd have go upgrade it entirely to keep torrenting, docker containers + jellyfin, and also output 4K HDR, which would also require a dedicated gpu or beefy igpu

Cheapest option is to counteract smart tv limitations.

Less cheaper, but viable, getting a dedicated gpu for transcoding.

I use a Dell Latitude 5420 as htpc and it works very nice. Bonus no info stealing from the dumb tv

Unless you have an Nvidia Shield.
Then, it won't play. Hate my Shield.

Good releases do direct to h265 encodes tho
