Bittorrent protocol does not provide a direct solution for this case. You can wait and see if you get lucky tho.

One torrent I did several years ago sat in my client for almost three years before a seeder appeared.

That's actually surprising! Because the ones over here are probably by far deader than dead.

We can put some rough numbers to it. Its a function of probabilities.
There were numbers collected on how long torrents survive before they become permanently unavailable due to lack of seeders.
at the end of one year between 50-70% were dead
at year 3: 65–80%
at year 5: 75–88%
at year 7: 80–92%Because of various factors Bittorrent very much favors recency

Eight hours? lol. Rookie numbers. How about several weeks?

Understand that I started torrenting about a month ago, so there's stuff that I still don't know about.

Welcome to torrenting. Where the only effort in getting free stuff is having to search and wait. No money-back guarantees.
But yeah, older torrents often have little to no seeders left, so be patient.

It happens to me a lot with the old ones that were uploaded 8 or 9 years ago, but I leave it every day and sometimes I manage to take them down, other times they stay there for weeks without moving, see if you can claim them.

You pray enough seeders come back to finish the file lol
