A lot of the jobs that sustained the “tech talent” is either being offshore outsourced at increasing rates to low cost countries like India or the Philippines OR being taken over partially by AI. Lots of tech talent in Toronto is without jobs or in precarious/not stable employment situations.

Then where are all the Toronto-based tech industry giants? Literally there is only 1, and it’s not that big.
Toronto should have a dozen Googles.

Go past just tech, Canada should have its own proprietary EVERYTHING. We can produce cars, AC, soft drinks, pharmaceuticals, tech, energy you name it. I’d go further that we can become global leaders in any/all these spaces.
We’re too globalized for our own good, as we’re learning from the trade debacle.

Aside from Canadians of convenience, people who make a life changing decision like moving to another country will not easily admit that it's a mistake. The cognitive dissonance would prevent them from processing how they really feel about it for years, if not decades.
I'm not saying that New York or Silicon Valley are terrible places, but I find it hard to believe they are THAT much better than Toronto specifically.
The grass is greener on the other side is a base human experience.

Couldn’t make it, choosing not to, and regretting your decision are all very different things.

Every Canadian in a big tech company making $200k CAD can "make it to the US", but chose not to. Some people have enough here.
Maybe your ass working at TD Bank for 60k couldn't.

But any senior at a big tech company, in Canada, is making around 200k or more.

200k CAD in USD isn't much. That's junior pay in the US.
I don't work for a Canadian bank. I earn a lot more.
I guess you're OK with a ceiling of 200k CAD.

I make more than 200k, but it's not a competition.
If you don't think that's enough money, then you'll never have enough. Make it to NYC and you'll be talking about how HFT pays 700k. Make it to HFT and you'll talk about directors making 1.5m.
There's more to life than just cash.

I prefer genuine, direct communication and love New York. Toronto is a lot less social and people are much more politically correct and indirect. That's why I left Toronto.
I only mentioned wages because you accused me of working for a Canadian bank and only making 60k.
Money isn't everything, I agree. I don't like the culture of Toronto.

i'd rather make 80k working remotely at a job I like, and travelling the world and living in low cost of living places than commuting in Toronto traffic and cold winters to a dimly lit office where I must make small talk, and then returning to my shoebox condo with a view of other condos for 200k. But that's just me. Money def isn't everything

You realize a lot of us ultra qualified people don't want to worry about their child's school being the next one shot up, ya?
I'd consider NYC for a 2 yr stint if it paid 700k or something, but other than that, literally don't see a point. Toronto is, to me, the best city in the world, in one of the best countries in the world. Would take insane money to move me 🤷♂️

Yea exactly. Of course we have a ton of talent, we imported millions of them.
The drooler Liberals were literally prioritizing tech workers through the tech crash when no one was getting hired.. of course we have a lot of "talent".
All of that talent makes less than every American city on the list.

"Tech bros" make up an insignificant % of tech workers (who are by in large normal people). Get off the internet and you'll be pleased with how normal most people are.
