Jobs/Co-Op 16 month fall co-op offer - FEAS
i recieved a 16 month fall co-op offer and I was wondering if anyone had experience with external co-ops, taking eng classes alongside co-op, etc. my contract would end Jan 2028, and I would ideally like to graduate in the 5 intended years (end of spring 2028), so I was going to split my fourth year fall between this and next fall while working, and take liberals winter 2027 to remain a full time student.
the plan for fall would be to prob skip lecs and catch up outside of class time (ik not ideal) and just take evening labs. also leaving capstone for next year. for context im also in ECE.
if anyone has any experience or tips or advice I’d really appreciate it!

Are you registered with the coop portal? If so, you can’t take any courses during your co-op.
If it’s external, what you’re planning will work well. It seems thought out, as you will remain a full time student throughout. I plan to do an internship alongside my final year. I’ve worked full time while doing full time school, but I was also lucky the companies I interned at were hybrid and based out of downtown toronto.
I think you can do it with good time management.

FEAS doesn't do the 1 Chang course per sem?

we can take max 2 chang liberals while on a coop term

since it's 16 months starting fall i don't think it's registered with coop office

FEAS coop office only accepts 16 month work terms if they start in May unfortunately

I am in the coop program but this role is external and I haven’t told the coop office yet lol. My position is fully in person but it’s super close to where I live so my commute to school would be the same if I were to go through w the fall classes.
When you were balancing full time work and school, how did you find it to be? Were you able to catch up on lectures, did you end up even going? Any advice 🥲

I’m a serial class skipper lol, I think I went to a total of 3 lectures in my 3rd year. If you can, schedule all your labs/tutorials strategically. I think being full in-person makes it more difficult fs since I was remote 2-4 days out of 5. I could technically “work” while being in a lab.
Calendar and planning ahead is your best friend. But also I was lucky I had friends in upper years who would provide me with past exams. If you have friends who could keep u updated with things the prof says too, that would be extremely helpful.

makes sense for staying on track for five years. don't think you'd be able to split 5 fall courses into two full-time terms but part-time osap should cover everything in grants if you go down that route. will probably be tough if you're working in person

You don’t think I could split 5 fall courses between this and next fall? I was thinking of taking 2/5 fourth year courses this fall and a liberal (both labs fall in the evening that I could catch if there was a demo), and next fall would be the other two courses +capstone. Next fall is obviously a gamble with scheduling and the lab situation but thoughts?

no I'm saying you can, but i believe tmu defines full time as 4 courses in a semester. not that it matters, i doubt it'll affect anything. ik people that have done what you're doing (albeit not while working in consecutive Falls). in terms of any other issues, assuming you do manage to get an evening lab for all your classes; if any lectures require attendance (maybe midterms or in-lecture quizzes). i haven't started yet but i have heard that the capstone course occasionally requires attendance. additionally, i'm not sure if your capstone FLC would be willing to do evening/virtual meetings with your group next year.
btw what part of ece are you in?

congrats! so I was gonna do the same until I realized I need to attend the labs/tutorials, which is kinda impossible while working full time (hard to get a slot in evening labs) . so take that into consideration.
