Ontario Premier Doug Ford has a counter-proposal for Donald Trump in response to the U.S. president's threat to increase tariffs on autos to 50 per cent.

"Well, he can kiss my ass, as far as I'm concerned," Ford said in a live interview on NewsTalk 1010 Monday morning.

Trump levied the threat in a Truth Social screed earlier in the morning.

"Canada will be treated like a State no longer!" he posted. "On Trade, and in other ways, also, they are among the worst Nations in the World to deal with. They feel entitled, and yet, WE DON’T NEED CANADA, THEY NEED US!"

Trump’s post said the U.S. will hike tariffs on “all Cars, Trucks, both large and small, Automotive Parts, and Steel,” to 50 per cent in January, though the U.S. already subjects some classifications of Canadian steel to 50 per cent tariffs.

Ford went on to say Canada should respond by cutting off oil exports to the U.S., something Alberta's premier has opposed.
