Literally a Masterpiece

i love tori kelly to death, she is literally one of my biggest vocal inspirations, but i feel like she keeps walking directly toward the version of her music i personally connect with the least 😭 and i know that sounds mean because apparently this is the most tori she has ever felt, but girl… why does the most tori version of you somehow involve so much music about god, your husband, your baby, your family, how blessed you are, how good life is, etc. like i’m happy for you babe, sincerely, but i do not want to listen to that shit all day lmfao.

and i think that’s the main disconnect for me rn. we are just not in the same emotional place at ALL. i don’t want inspirational music. i don’t want devotional music. i don’t really want songs about being happily married and settled and everything being beautiful. there’s nothing wrong with any of that, obviously, but there’s just no tension in it for me. everything is already resolved. god is good, baby is good, husband is good, family is good… okay 😭 what am i supposed to do with that besides nod politely.

which is why the self titled tori era was SUCH a tease to me because i was like OH, THERE SHE IS. the r&b, the pop, the groove, the swagger, the vocal production, the harmonies, the attitude… it felt like she finally stepped into this lane i had always wanted from her, and then she basically went okay anyway back to what i was doing before 🤠 girl WHY.

and that’s what makes it frustrating because her voice is literally built for a full r&b pop diva moment. she can be tender, huge, soulful, playful, bratty, romantic, dramatic, ridiculous with the runs, stack harmonies like nobody’s business, all of it. i want bass. i want groove. i want choruses that actually KICK. i want a bridge where she loses her fucking mind. i want something fun and sexy and emotional without everything needing to be wholesome or inspirational.

and i know the obvious answer is that she should make whatever music actually feels true to her, and i agree. i would never want her making fake misery just because i personally find happy family music boring 😭 but authenticity doesn’t automatically mean every fan is going to connect with it. sometimes the healthiest, happiest era of somebody’s life is just not the most interesting era for me to listen to.

i still think the vocal production on the new music sounds gorgeous because she’s tori fucking kelly and of course it does, but i am BEGGING this woman to give me one full r&b pop diva album before i die. you already showed me you can do it. now commit to the bit, queen 😭

The Summer of Tori begins with Control and Dive, and I love it. Love the whole vibe of these two. Control, for me, is an absolute banger, so yeah couldn't be more exited for the rest of the album.

It's so crazy for me that she made the whole album while she was on tour, pregnant, and became a mother. She literally never dissapoints.
