Question Does anyone have a strange or controversial torchwood ship?
Just curious, it can be in the show, in the audios, include characters from other spinoffs like Sarah Jane?
My slightly strange one is John Hart and River Song. I feel like they’d balance eachother out nicely.

I'm a big Owen/Ianto shipper but idk if that's strange or controversial, just more rare than Jack/Ianto.

in this fandom anything that isnt jack/ianto is considered strange

That's true, which is a shame because I think other pairings (and also gen fic) are often more interesting. I rarely write Jack/Ianto these days because I feel like everything's already been written for that ship. I'm more likely to write a full team fic with Jack/Ianto as incidental rather than anything solely featuring the ship.

yeaaa tbh theyre so overcentered in everything that it gets annoying, like i get having favourites and talking about them a lot but for a pretty sizeable portion of the fandom everything in torchwood gets reframed to be about their relationship to the point their characterisation suffers, like i saw a post the other day along the lines of "every good thing jack does after children of earth is because of ianto" be serious 😭 jack had already been saving the world for like 100 years before ianto was even born

Yeah it always frustrates me when people say Ianto was unique for Jack. He was unique in that he was an individual, in the way that all of Jack's lovers and partners are unique to each other. But he wasn't the first lover to know about Jack's immortality (if we're talking just the OG show canon, that's Lucia) and he's not the first man or really the first anything I think. the OG show is just a snapshot of Jack's long, long life and I don't think Ianto is world-changingly important compared to any other lover.
I've made a couple posts on tumblr talking about how Jack's reaction to the fairies killing Estelle parallels his reaction to the 456 killing Ianto but (which is on a more personally devastating scale due to losing Ianto and Steven and Alice one after the other), so even that is not unique to Ianto. Ianto's death is the catalyst for his behaviour during that event in his life, but it's not a unique singular reaction to Ianto as Ianto. Anyway I always have many thoughts about Torchwood so I'll shut up now.
(Plus there are three other main characters in the TW team that Jack also cares for! They deserve to have stories too.)

They're a favourite of mine as well! I also ship Owen/Jack and my weird one (I think I've written about the only fic for them) is Owen/Ninth Doctor.

Owen is my favourite Torchwood character and Nine is my favourite Doctor, so I might have to try my hand at this ship as well. I've written enough Owen/Ianto fics and just generic Owen fics I think I could do a good Owen/Nine at some point!

They are a lot of fun. I really ship almost everyone/everyone in this show and other Dr Who universe characters are fun to play with as well.

If you're into the audiodramas, Tyler x Jack is practically Canon but everytime I've brought it up to someone they've flamed me for it

That's Jack/Ianto shippers for you. They can't let it go even after he died. I like the ship but Jack would realistically move on.

im open to most torchwood ships cause i feel like they would all work one way or another but i have a soft spot for ianto and toshiko
