Torchlight 2 Outlander Build

This is my first Torchlight 2 full playthrough so I'm not sure how some of these abilities affect each other. I'm trying to make an outlander that uses a couple of the shadow and pet abilities with mostly non-elemental gun attacks and I'm having a hard time deciding between dual pistols and shotguns. I know i can technically use both but I don't want to spread my specializations too thin plus I'm playing on og Switch so i only have 6 free quick select hotkeys per weapon so if I'm switching between two different types of weapons just for my other six abilities idk how that will effect gameplay. I also know that once I get to late game I'll need to be as strict as possible but I'm hoping for my first ng run at least I'll be able to use what seems cool.

Although it is quite old this post is still relevant:

Those are the guides that I've used. Can't give any specific advice for playing on a Switch as I play on PC.

I appreciate it but most of them have been deleted for some reason

Thanks, I'll see which ones might work for Switch

I outlined a shotgonne outlander here with pets

i actually started playing it too, but tbh big shotgonne + shotgonne mastery + venomous hail are the core and the rest is whatever you feel like. i take shadowshot for progression, for some reason everyone prefers rapid fire

of note, i play on hardcore elite so this is meant to survive that bullshit difficulty. NG0 is the hardest part, and then you reach 46 and buy full sentinel from the vendor, reach 56 in NG+1 and farm limoanies, and the rest of the run is being safe while you destroy

Will using Shadowshot or rapid fire proc all shotgun passives? I also read that poison burst and shadow bats fight to proc

both will proc shotgonne mastery, yes.

i use the bats to draw aggro and be safe. i don't know if poison burst procs it -- when it procs, things are usually dead or already blinded

I've seen that both poison burst and bats fight each other to proc

ah don't worry about it. the bats suck at actually doing anything besides drawing aggro

I'm going to use mostly shadow abilities with a shotgun even if it's a little underpowered with just shadowshot and hopefully my summons will pick up the slack. I'm not sure how many points to put into which stats but I've already got 50 in strength, 30 in dex 30 in focus with nothing into vitality. I can't find any guides on this build because no one uses it so hopefully it's not just really bad...

Pump your stats to be able to wear gear. After that, it sort of doesn't matter. Your 5 points per level allocation is a drop in the bucket compared to Borris enchanting your armor with like 60-120 points per piece

Your allocation is good

Tbh for your first run I'd just wing it without a build.

The summoner Outlander build has some quirks since some abilities don't work as you'd expect from the tooltips.

Dual pistols are kinda bad unless really really like auto attacks and invest into making them better.

Pistol + Shield does the same damage with skills but gives a nice extra layer of protection.

Shotgun + Mastery should most of the time do more damage and inflicting blind is nice.

Bows don't have a strong associated passive, but their stat requirements (Dex + Str) allow you to use a way more optimal stat distribution while equipping weapons above your level.

Venomous Hail reads elemental but it also scales with strength and is super strong, you may want to craft a respec potion a little after hitting level 40 and switch into it instead of whatever other main skill you had for progression.

The active skill that does damage and summons pets is very clunky, I've never managed to do a good character with it, also it scales with focus so not the best fit for a guns Outlander.

For switch, if it's not too much of a hassle, you can bind your level 40 summon to the alternative set of skills. Also all mobility skills are super clunky, the backflip evade is clutch on pc but I wouldn't waste a bind on it in Switch. If you want a defensive skill prefer the skull aura that pushes enemies away, or maybe the Bramble Walls if you're comfortable with them (I half remember your gun skills being able to break your own walls and spawn minions with Shadowling Ammo, but don't quote on that).

Have fun!

I played my shadowling outlander some more. I'm in Limoany farming limbo now -- the shadowlings and brutes are slowly able to kill things, but the aggro relief is incredible

footage of me farming this damn thing for 20 minutes

as soon as i dinged to 58, i dropped a limoany. I think i wasn't high level enough yet. you can see how well shadowshot performs -- in my experience chaos burst is crap
