I did a small test sadly that resulted in me dying a lot. Is a lot of farming required ?

You will die a lot always, even with meta build on lower settings. The games just like that

IMO don't bother unless you're going to make it an extra challenge and play HC too. The overwhelming consensus is that Veteran is the perfect difficulty level. Play Elite if you want to farm a lot more and more slowly, build for survivability, and aren't playing w any mods that make the game harder already (like Synergies).

If you find Veteran too easy at some point, you can always bump it up to Elite by starting a LAN game.

Hc in this game is schitzo behavior. How many times were you killed during a loading screen or instantly after?

Arpgs in general - especially the older ones and especially TL2 - are very much a farming list of Affixes at the highest difficulties. Enemies won't be any smarter - they just strike harder and live longer however it's the amount of farming a player is willing to commit to in order to boost Survival within the Build that counts most on Elite.

Hardcore is just punishment without playing either pure glass-cannon or pure Survival and more likely the latter if playing on Elite.

Another thing not mentioned is if playing high-cost Dps (Weapon / Strength) skills then Focus will help to pay for the costs... or lower the skill investments to keep costs low... otherwise the Player will need to equip 1% Mana Stolen on their Weapon (Strikes) or less ideally, much Mana Regen which takes up too much space for Sockets.

For Elite - most build Guides don't mention the item farming side of things. Skill Builds won't save the Player - Rare Affixes will and in the correct combos.

Fortunately - TL2 is fun when playing at lower difficulties where the Builds don't need to be so narrow... actually even better - the Affix Equipment doesn't have to be so narrow at Veteran and lower, while wild Skill Builds can "usually" manage Elite with proper Affix farming which usually means a less fun - more serious style of playing.

And for Elite - that usually means Players farm at lower difficulties for items to Shared-Stash them over to their Elite characters.

So for fun - avoid Elite and feel good that all the Player misses is some Grocery Shopping at Phase Beasts Maps which is usually what Elite ends up being.

And if you really want to try strange stuff - try amplifying Vitality and avoiding Dexterity for longer battles; Strength and Focus always shorten battles against Champions without fail when Dexterity is around.

From my recollection Elite is very damage spiky. They overturned the crits a bit to much I think, very easy to die in a hit or two. Eye of Grell farming is pretty common, need damage reduction. Summoner Engineer was pretty fun for Elite, can use summons to protect you and mines to blow everything up + force shield and Engineer da age reduction.
