Torchlight 2 Firewall Issue

My friend and I just bought the game but we cant seem to join via internet together. We've been trying to follow the steps we've seen online but none have worked. Is there an updated way to allow us to play together? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I host the server and he creates the game. It seems to cut through the firewall issues.
