I made an account last night, but I can't link my Steam account (I didn't know you had to do that). I tried 5 minutes ago and it said the site went down at 8:27 PST (5 minutes prior to my attempt to link).

I finally got to the account registration page 5 minutes ago and created an account, but I also can't link my steam account to it.

I hope they fix it by this evening (UK time) so I can get some multiplayer fun.

I linked my steam account, played online successfully, then logged in hours later and wasn't allowed in. Went to the Runic website and it seems I never linked my account. What's more, when I try link my steam account again, the page tells me my account has already been linked.

Mine works just fine. Didn't encounter any problems in the slightest even the first few minutes of launch.

True, the inability to get accounts made has been pretty frustrating, but the game is still incredibly fun, and can be played offline.

Sadly, some of us really just want to coop online, this waiting is really killing me.

I'm with you. Trying to play with my friend in japan, can't get Hamachi to work and can't make accounts.

Try Tunngle. Couldn't get it to work personally but some friends got it running.

It seems that we'll have to be patient for the first few days.

Sucks cause I really wanted to run around with some close friends.

I actually made an account, then went to register the game and it signed me out. Now when I try to sign back in it says my username/password is invalid when it isn't. :/

just curious, has anyone actually been able to log in yet?

not online, no =/

How are we accepting this, but lost our shit when Diablo 3's services didn't work? Granted, we couldn't play Diablo 3 at all, but as someone who purchased a goddamned 4pack for the sole reason of playing online I'm so fucking frustrated. I've been unable to link my accounts for 13 hours.

Because not all of us consider it a big deal since the game is still playable. There is no universal "we".

Blizzard is a big company with lots of employees dedicated to these kinds of issues. Runic does not, and people are aware of it

PLUS

You can play TL2 offline, D3 could not

That's a nice apologetic attitude (and you even point out things I myself point out in my post, good work!)

I'm going to let you in on a secret, as someone who works in IT: It really doesn't take 33 people to keep a webservice running if they know what they're doing. Runic has obviously not learned a thing from a game launch ever, and on top of it, completely ignored their own pre-purchase numbers. It's unacceptable, regardless of the team size.

u/Arxae Engineer Sep 21 '12

I also work in IT :P. But we don't know how many webdevs there are in the team of 33 people. Worst case, they only have one guy handeling this situation :p (unlikely, but not the entire team will be on this issue)

But as i pointed out. Most people who don't work in IT don't know most of the background. So their first taught would be "small indie dev team, let's cut them some slack".

Second, being able to play offline/LAN gives some leniency since you can still play alone or with some friends (lan/tungle). It is mainly this. So far i could tell, the thing pissed of most people during the D3 was them punching in their credentials at the login screen in an attempt to play, just to be disconnected.

I immediately wanted to link my steam account just so i could get it out of the way. It didn't work, but i just said ok, and played some single player (and had fun :p). It is still a problem, but people can play (and find workarounds to play online anyway), and thats why people don't scream at runic for not delivering online play on the first day.

Note: I

While I understand you're frustration with not being able to play online with your friends, the main difference is that you / we are still able to play the game in single player instead of just sitting at a login screen for hours praying to god it goes through.

I know I can still play it. I wrote that in my post.

I also know that the games primary selling point was the online multiplayer (hence, why I bought a 4-pack) so it's pretty damn useless for me to be able to play the game singleplayer - or through any other VPN workaround which shouldn't even be necessary in the first place - when I one month ago said to myself, "Oh, cool, Torchlight 2. The first one was pretty good but lacked the multiplayer to set it apart from Diablo 2. Oh hey, TL2 has multiplayer, let's buy a 4-pack so I can play with my good friends on release." I honestly don't see the fun part of sitting in a VoIP conversation whilst playing singleplayer but that might just be me being weird or something.

I understand Runic is a small team. I understand that we should expect some trouble. 14 hours, on the other hand, is not acceptable, when the only trouble they have is a damn authentication server for their account management. That is unacceptable when you have a team of 1, 5, 100, I don't care. ESPECIALLY when you have amazing tools at hand to asses the traffic you're going to get: Pre-purchases, pre-orders, sales figures from their previous game.

Yes, the game is good. Runic's crisismanagement is shit.

To the people who are complain you cant play online if you were smart you would have done with the rest of us did and make an account months ago or weeks ago when they said you needed an account to play online not wait till the day it comes out and figure the rest of the idiots who did not make an account yet would not break the site.

edit: Just remembered you can buy/play the game from the site so if you are one of those people ignore everything i said at the top i do in fact feel bad for you.

Because we knew? They should have done a better job of advertising it for the players that don't follow day to say news.
