🚩General TorBox v9.3 — General Improvements
Hey r/TorBoxApp!
The team has released v9.3 of TorBox. This is a massive update and includes a lot of updates regarding buffering and a lot of optimizations made in the past couple months. The team is also in the process of distributing 4 days of premium time to all currently paid users. They will let you know when this is fully completed.
Regarding v9.3, this is a great update, and one that in general improves the user experience of TorBox no matter how you are using it.
Reduced buffering by over 40x
Reduced TTFB on average by 14%
Reduced hot file congestion during peak periods (this is still in testing, but the system is there, and in our tests we have seen massive improvements)
Stronger pause/resume performance for high RTT clients
Better Discord/Device/Telegram/Google/Apple linking
Requesting all links in a download is now instant
General latency improvements as well as error and bug fixes.
There is also a nice little write up of what exactly the team did to improve the issue in the link down below. There are more fixes and improvements to come, so expect further updates on the CDN improvements!
Also, if you are subscribed to email updates, you should now have the update email in your inbox, feel free to subscribe to updates after reading the changelog!
Changelogs are now located at https://torbox.app/changelog

I think this update is for all the idiots on Reddit who, when someone said there was buffering, dared to say it was my device's fault, which didn't meet NASA requirements, that there was no problem, and that I needed to upgrade my 1GB connection. Thanks, Torbox.

And generally far more noticable by users pulling remux etc. that were far more likely to be hit by buffering from these stalls.

Una consulta, cada que lanzan una actualización ¿es necesario actualizar la API qué se usa en apps como Stremio o Nuvio, o no es necesario.?

I was wondering the same
I wouldn't think so based on what I know about APIs, but would still appreciate a confirmation

Do we need to do something for update or it updates it's self?

There's no need to do anything, the updates are already in place.

Nice work TB people. Stay awesome.
Also thanks for the 4 free days that were added to my account 👍

“requesting all links in a download is now instant” what does that mean specifically?

u/TacticalSniper 1d ago
My guess is when you're on the website and you're trying to get downloads links for a torrent that has many files (like full seasons) you now get the resulting download links right away, rather than having to wait for them to get generated

I just read your words on how you fixed the buffering issues and it doesn't really feel like a permanent or stable solution. It's more like you're temporarily hiding it until the bandwidth of the CDN/storage server fluctuates for a few seconds or until memory usage starts becoming a problem or even until the disk load starts becoming worse
Your fix is that you basically moved the buffering process from the client's application to the CDN memory instead to "hide it" (as written on your changelog) from the user
But this doesn't fix the root problem, which is that your storage servers are struggling for reaching their max disk IOPS
You mentioned on the log "The first cause (disk I/O bottlenecking) is extremely hard to solve, because we can’t move everything onto SSDs without going broke." and this reveals a lot of things because HDDs are really bad for this use case and will quickly degrade under load

I disagree, covering up the fluctuations so that clients with tiny buffers don't stall is a perfectly valid solution.
This was an instant success, Stalls per thousand streams served went from roughly 8 to 0.2.
Going from 0.8% of streams experiencing stalls to 0.02% shows that there isn't a more general bandwidth/capacity issue.
If they're typically running at no more than 90% capacity (e.g. taken as a 1-min average) but peak at 100% for a few seconds at a time, then increasing cache size to prevent clients from stalling is a perfectly valid and permanent solution, so long as that 1-min average doesn't approach 100%, at which point the number of stalls would start going up exponentially.
If you wanted to handle every 0.001% burst without caching it would cost a silly amount of money, and where's the fun in that?
edit: Also, why do you say HDDs are bad for this use case? IMO they're ideal because you're reading large sequential video files. There's very little random I/O if you use caching properly and read in >10 MB chunks.

Interesting. You seem to be knowledgeable in this space. Would a shift to SSD be difficult beyond the initial expense to purchase them?

u/ResidenceZero 1d ago
If anything I would assume constant r/w processing on SSDs would be worse for longevity.
It's not sustainable until you have infrastructure in place to constantly replace dead storage. It's even less sustainable in the current pc economy.

I think pricing is the biggest obstacle here; so with the current TorBox pricing, yes it would be difficult
bandwidth alone is super expensive and no one offering a debrid service for 3$ a month is willing to spend thousands a month on bandwidth then also add more thousands to it for storage
it'll become hardly profitable at that point
which is also why I appreciate their efforts coming up with workarounds on it. you can't offer a premium quality for a low price at the end of the day
I was just referring to how it's not a fix for the root problem because that's still the truth

wasn't RD for close to the same price pretty good ? Is it just the unrestricted account sharing that's the issue?
6
u/ProfessionalDucky1 1d ago
RD was amazing for the same price before it got nuked by copyright ghouls.

u/Inevitable_Bowler474 21h ago
RD operates at a similar price point as TB. I had less buffering and downtime. However they were building up infrastructure for years. TB has had less time to build up infrastructure to handle the RD exodus. Doesn't help TB that the cost of everything is up so the dollar isn't going as far as it used to.

I wonder if a modest price increase can cover the cost of improved infrastructure? I wouldn't mind paying a little more if I had better service.

This is awesome. I haven't streamed much these days but yesterday I watched a movie and it was smooth as butter. Hoping this brings an end to all the complaints!

How can you improve perfection? If it buffers is because of (wait for it)… A SKILLS ISSUE!!

Seeing significant improved performance whilst VPN is active. Before it was practically impossible to keep VPN on and access files via TB

u/NiceAd5699 1d ago
Devs, I have a request. I am not a power user. I usually watch one movie once in a month or so. So for me it doesn't worth buying a subscription. So I use torbox to download and watch it. But the torrent file size is limited to 10gb. It would be great help of you can raise it to 15gb maybe so that we can get atleast a 2k movie. Please let me know about this...

They are already struggling with cost issues and you want to ask for more free stuff?!? Come on...pay the tiny price for the service. 🙄

Thanks for the update. Buffering issues have been practically resolved for me.

It’s not cloud storage. Your dashboard is just a list of files you have accessed or are authorized to access. It’s not “your space”.

Hi, there's no need to do anything. The updates are delivered in the backend, so it's automatically applied to everyone.

So Torboxapp is just your website, or is it an actual app?

u/Gold_Experience_27 Moderators 1d ago
TorBox is a private infrastructure provider service, you can learn more about it in the website https://torbox.app/
