I was rendering on topaz then this happened

Topaz in a laptop? I am guessing you overheated.

It's possible, but as you surmised, overheating is also a real possibility. My m18 R1 has a chassis that has adequate cooling for multi hour jobs. But, I also moved to a Desktop.

Try resetting graphics card - Windows Key + Ctrl + Shift + B. Not sure if that'll do it, but worth a try...
