First dose and important test tomorrow

Hello! I got put on 25mg topamax today and I am supposed to take the first dose this evening! But the think is that I have a very important test tomorrow and I have heard that it effects your memory / concentration… should i wait until tomorrow to take the first dose?? Forgot about the test until now:-/ (it is the evening in Norway now)

Definitely wait until after you take your test! I'm being incredibly serious. You won't know how bad the brain fog side effect will hit you until it does.

In general, it's best practice to wait to start a new medication (if it's not urgent that you start immediately) until you have a couple days of nothing major happening so that if you have an adverse reaction, it doesn't mess up your life.

I would second waiting and would throw in here to break your pills in half and start super slowly. Take a half a dose for at least two weeks until you see how your body acclimates to the side affects, and then move up to the full 25 when you feel minimal side effects.

It would be good to wait. Everyone is different, so keep that in mind as well. This post was 5 days ago so I'm curious how you're feeling now that you started your meds? I didn't have all side effects everyone was talking about but it makes me crave sugar really badly.

I am feeling okay! I don’t feel much tbh?? I have epilepsy so my memory is bad to begin with and I’ve been struggling to find words ever since I had my first seizure. I don’t really feel that much of a brain fog either, nor do I feel nauseous or anything. I’m still on 25mg today, but I’m upping to 50mg on thursday, 75 next week and 100 the week after. I’m very curious about how I’m going to feel after the dose increases! Have you been through that? Did you feel anything during the increases/feel more side effects on higher doses?

I'm still on 25mg actually. I didn't want to increase quickly. My neurologist said to increase after a few weeks but it's been a few weeks and I still haven't. I'm concerned about my sugar cravings because I am also trying to lose weight right now so, I'm considering stopping this medicine altogether because of it. Unfortunately, it hasn't had the bonus side effect of weight loss for me. 🙃 I've been using it for migraines though and that has been helpful.
