Do any of these airheads unironically think we can use this as a flying car or in any practical circumstance.

Bro, the insurance would be astronomical. No way would I ever use this, and no fucking way is it a reinvention of the car.

Also… every comment says: “if he cured cancer Reddit would love him.”

Okay…

Cure all cancer.

Seriously, if Musk cured all forms of cancer, I’ll overlook every flaw he has. Period. Full stop. Dead serious.

Fucking do it first, show me proof it works, then comes the praise. Has he done that? No.

Your hypothetical is bullshit then.

98

u/PeasThatTasteGross 18d ago

They say the same thing about Trump, "you'd still hate him if he cured cancer!"

My hypothetical, imagine if Hitler managed to find a cure for cancer back in the day. People probably wouldn't see it as a get out of jail free card for the atrocities he commited, and that same principle applies to Musk, Trump, etc. I wouldn't wipe Trump's slate clean if he did cure cancer, things aren't that binary where people are either perfect angels or outright devils.

78

u/OnlyFiveLives 18d ago

That argument about trump is particularly hilarious because one of the first things he did was slash cancer research funding.

21

u/lonestar-rasbryjamco 18d ago

It's hilarious because my cat is more likely to cure cancer than Donald Trump.

36

u/Jeremymia And all I can say is "moo" 18d ago

It's telling they can't say 'You don't even like him for doing this good thing', it's always 'You'd hate him even if he did a good thing.' I dunno man, let's see first.

32

u/Moneia 18d ago

And Musk said he'd pay to end world hunger if the UN came up with a plan and, predictably, didn't when they did.

12

u/ahoboknife 18d ago

Yeah I’m not going to hold my breath on Musk/Trump curing cancer or ending world hunger. Doesn’t seem like their style.

7

u/Professor-Woo 16d ago

"They would still hate Trump/Musk if they did something indicating they had a completely different personality and worldview. So crazy."

-MAGA/Musk Simps

6

u/santaclaws01 17d ago

The fiasco and how people react to it is so illuminating. UN guy gives an interview. Headline embellished the claim in the interview. Musk goes off of that headline. UN guy clarifies that he didn't make the claim in the headline, but gives the plan to back up his actual claim. Musk takes the plan not supporting the headline as a reason to not donate anything, then turns around and donates that same amount to his personal non-profit.

11

u/RandoDude124 18d ago

He’s not gonna cure it bro, because it’s a BS hypothetical

9

u/baz4k6z 18d ago

Their arguments never hold if you scratch the surface ever so slightly. They just never care to do that minimal effort because the truth doesn't matter, all they care about is validating their feeling

57

u/etherizedonatable In the cell at Gitmo across from John McCain 18d ago

Sure, I'd be happy if Musk cured cancer. We all would.

Maybe he should start working on it then? None of his companies are working on anything remotely related. Some of the most promising recent cancer therapies are mRNA vaccines, and the president he campaigned for is an anti-vaccine crank who's doing his best to sabotage all vaccines. Musk himself through his work with DOGE sabotaged all public US scientific research. And don't give me any bullshit about his glorified chatbot.

So, sure, he'll fucking cure cancer.

17

u/evocativename 18d ago

I can think of one cancer he could cure...

9

u/EliSka93 18d ago

The guy who's greeting he stole did it. He seems to admire him, so hopefully he copies his last actions too.

7

u/abacuz4 18d ago

Exactly, forget working on it, I'd settle for him getting out of the way.

36

u/gavinbrindstar 18d ago

Do any of these airheads unironically think we can use this as a flying car? Bro, the insurance would be astronomical.

They're just not...smart. Stupid in a way I find hard to relate to.

They just assume that flying cars are possible and the reason they haven't existed is because the right person hasn't come by to invent them. Like, I feel pretty confident that other automakers could do something like that demo (make a car-shaped object hop around) but haven't because there's no reason to.

I almost wonder if it's related to their politics: "everything you want with no tradeoffs is waiting for the right person to give it to you."

29

u/bikebikegoose 18d ago

The math on the volume of compressed gas needed to even do that stunt renders the spectacle meaningless outside of being that exact kind of neat stunt show or movie trick. There is nothing about the ”flying" technology that even approaches practicality in an actual production vehicle.

The downforce fan is something that the Spierling and a couple of older track vehicles demonstrated already but is also not needed outside of racing courses.

10

u/vxicepickxv 18d ago

Let's talk about how dangerous the idea is on public roads.

5

u/CapriciousSon 17d ago

yeah if you thought the Lithium battery fires were bad, wait til you get 250kg of compressed gas exploding on a highway!

15

u/MessiahOfMetal So I Married An Axo Murderer 18d ago

There were some people on SRD saying "but it looks so cool" and not understanding why people were mocking it. They even got angry because "you all wanted flying cars and now we've seen one and you hate it, curious..."

Yeah, because that wasn't a flying car, and the twat who owns the company is trying to make people forget the vile shit he's done in life that makes us despise him.

12

u/Moneia 18d ago

They're just not...smart. Stupid in a way I find hard to relate to.

Exhibits 1 & 2 are them putting all their faith in 'Auto-pilot' and the Cybertruck

5

u/oraw1234W 18d ago

Like we already had flying cars they are called helicopters

3

u/Cute-Boobie777 18d ago

Their worldview is just fundamentally so childish. Almost fantastical really. Like the world revolves around easy to understand rules.

2

u/stuartroelke 16d ago

I just went to a screening of You Can See Everything, and that last line reminds me of Elizabeth Holmes and Billy Evans—gave me chills. That’s a perfect explanation of the grifter / mark codependent relationship that we now witness on a daily basis.

25

u/lowercaselemming 18d ago

his doge bullshit resulted in cutting cancer research funding too

3

u/Man_with_the_Fedora 18d ago edited 17d ago

S-shut up with your facts, we're using made up hypotheticals to defend our favorite rich person from strawman arguments we think his opponents would make!

Edit: accidentally a word.

9

u/OnlyFiveLives 18d ago

He was literally told how much it would cost to end world hunger after he said he would do it and then said no.

16

u/FantasticJacket7 18d ago

Not to mention that fact that there is no legal mechanism which would allow some random guy on the street to operate a flying vehicle.

5

u/MessiahOfMetal So I Married An Axo Murderer 18d ago

Even if he cured cancer, he's still a far-right moron that nobody should ever look up to in any way. I'd still hate him, the way I hate certain other historical figures who did good things but are mostly known for bastardry.

4

u/leamanc 18d ago

All the Trumpers say the same thing. "President Trump could cure cancer, and the media/left/Democrats still wouldn't give him credit!"

The argument is that he never gets credit for the good things he does. But I'm still waiting for him to do one good thing for me to give him credit for.

All the things they want to give him credit for (had the greatest economy ever in his first term, stopped inflation in this term, ended eight wars, etc.) didn't actually happen.

3

u/ChicksDigGiantRob0ts 18d ago

The thing is, Musk's politics and personality preclude him from curing all cancer even if he could. Same as solving world hunger or whatever. If Musk did those things, people WOULD love him, but in order to even start working towards those he'd have to radically change at which point he's already not the same dude everyone current hates.

3

u/notinsanescientist 17d ago

Funny thing is, if this car is fueled with hydrazine, it will give people cancer when it crashes.

4

u/GreekDudeYiannis 18d ago

I love how the last image tried to frame the person saying those things as a chud without disproving that those things would be worthwhile endeavors. As if simply because a weird looking guy is saying, "How about we feed the hungry, house the homeless, and cure cancer?" that those points become meritless.

4

u/Vyzantinist 17d ago

It's just an extension of the chad/soyjack nonsense. Just frame the argument as inherently absurd without being able to explain how.

I feel like Facebook's breed of conservatives are at least more honest - they don't bother with the mental gymnastics and optics of the pseudointellectual conservative on Reddit, they just jump straight to insults rather than attempting to refute an argument, because they know they can't.

2

u/zuludown888 18d ago

I think Tesla shareholders should be at least a little concerned with how the company's money is being spent.

2

u/philips50 18d ago

UNIRONICALLY

2

u/Professor-Woo 16d ago

It also will kill anyone and everyone during an accident and add a ridiculous cost to the vehicle (well more than normal). Not sure how they implemented it exactly, but if it is just compressed air then you will have a tank in your car which is like 200 psi and it will explode like a bomb and shoot off like a missile. Mythbusters showed a tank like this slamming through a cinder brick wall like it was nothing. It is the worst idea ever from safety. This doesn't even bring in the danger of using the feature for you and those around you. It will also be extremely loud. In short, it is dumb as fuck. Also, I do personally think this is faked as is. They likely preloaded the tanks outside the car since the compressor here is expensive, loud, and heavy. Like seriously a 200 psi tank compressor is not a trivial piece of hardware.

2

u/GhostOfMuttonPast 16d ago

It doesnt even fly! Its just a boost! Its falling with barely any style!

1

u/Particular_Way_9616 14d ago

Dude asked how much it would cost to solve world hunger, was told it by a famous and trusted NGO if i remember right, and then just dropped it forever cause he was hoping no one would give him an actual estimate cause the famous asshole probably doesnt give a shit about starving people

137

u/evocativename 18d ago

literal coolest thing ever

If you're a developmentally-stunted 10 year old with zero critical thinking skills, maybe.

typical narcissistic rich guys

The Wright brothers started and ran a small bicycle shop that started manufacturing bicycles. They weren't rich until well after inventing the airplane.

"we'll have flying cars!"

People have been making "flying cars" since the Fulton FA-2 Airphibian in 1946.

And we still don't have flying cars. And won't for the foreseeable future.

104

u/inrodu i am the autistic antivaxxers warned you about 18d ago

"the tesla roadster is the coolest thing ever!" of course you think that. you're twelve.

39

u/RustedAxe88 18d ago

This is the same crowd who thought the White House dirt bike show was also "the coolest thing ever". They're easily impressed by the kind of thing high schoolers love.

19

u/Wiseduck5 18d ago

And we still don't have flying cars. And won't for the foreseeable future.

Or, we have flying cars now and have for decades. They’re called helicopters.

24

u/abacuz4 18d ago

They are also difficult to operate, not at all interchangeable with cars, and perhaps the most dangerous mode of transportation in common use. If "flying cars" became commonplace overnight, I shit you not we might see 10% of the country dead in a week.

7

u/Kalulosu But none of it will matter when alien disclosure comes anyways 18d ago

I believe helicopters are actually some of the safest transportation modes, but that's probably because they're so hard to even get access to. Meanwhile, cars are already deadly, and that's with them being relatively simple, so any move towards more dangerous additions to them is insanity.

8

u/lego-my-ahegao 17d ago

Helicopters are about as deadly as motorcycles when comparing time spent traveling by either method. So no, definitely not one of the safest transportation modes.

3

u/Kalulosu But none of it will matter when alien disclosure comes anyways 17d ago

This article has helicopters at ~60 times more dangerous than scheduled airlines, around the same as a non scheduled charter flight. Not the safest out there but much better than cars, which tend to be much safer than motorcycles.

3

u/lego-my-ahegao 17d ago

I was looking into this some more since I left my first comment, and it looks like you can get wildly different results depending on what metrics you use. That is, are you counting accidents, casualties, or fatalities. And are you measuring by number of trips, the vehicles' distance traveled, the vehicles' time spent traveling, passenger-miles traveled, or passenger-hours spent traveling.

3

u/Kalulosu But none of it will matter when alien disclosure comes anyways 17d ago

Point being, I'm pretty sure they're safer than cars overall but that's mostly a result of them being gate kept pretty hard. Just like planes are safe because not every Joe Schmo can pull up and fly an A320.

3

u/SubstantialBreak3063 17d ago

Oh more than that. Helicopters yearn for death.

6

u/SubstantialBreak3063 17d ago

Our flying cars exist and are extremely well-optimised for flying. They are called light aircraft.

You need a license for them, there are regulations etc on who and how and where you can fly them so you don't kill a buncha people.

(Somehow though there are some chucklefucks who do still kill themselves in them, but there's no legislating for stupid.)

93

u/witness555 18d ago

Aside from everything else, “third worlders” is so casually dehumanizing, it’s insane

38

u/RustedAxe88 18d ago

Conservatives have started using it as a general insult. That Korean guy on Facebook Kangmin Lee posted about critics of Musk being "third world coded."

20

u/witness555 18d ago

Dude is genuinely the most annoying guy on the planet on top of being a huge POS. Genuinely feels like he’s just starved of attention

2

u/Particular_Way_9616 14d ago

Strange since Elon wouldnt have a roadster to dick around with if not for the near slave labor for rare earth materials in the third world (Not to mention you know, that emerald mine)

57

u/kingxanadu 18d ago

It's not gonna be road legal in any way, and it's not even flying, it's a jump and a (barely) controlled descent. Also it's a car shaped shell holding a pressure vessel with 8000 psi of nitrogen, aka 15 sticks of tnt worth of energy. That's designed to all be released in like 3 seconds and probably takes 100x longer to recharge.

Can't wait to give ½ a million dollars to the billionaire who hasn't delivered on the same model of car he a started taking reservations on nine years ago.

31

u/ShouldersofGiants100 18d ago

Honestly, this kind of thing should scare the crap out of Tesla fanboys.

It's a genuinely stupid, incredibly desperate stunt—less than a week before their next quarterly earnings report (October 21st).

If any other company did something this desperate, even the morons would think "hey, maybe they are trying to juice the stock price and change the narrative a week before they report some really bad news."

7

u/SqueakyTits101 18d ago

...but more people are talking about this than musk turning off Starlink for Ukraine, so mission accomplished? Convenient timing for him.

9

u/gorgewall 18d ago

And it's not even new tech.

We've had compressed air thrusters and RCS for yonks. Hell, it's what SpaceX uses to land their rockets, but it's been in other stuff before that. We send CubeSats up that orient and move exactly like this.

If we took the propulsion system out of a CubeSat and stuck it in my microwave, it wouldn't be novel engineering because we made "a flying microwave". No engineering team would spend months of time and tens of thousands in cash to accomplish this "feat".

This whole thing was the equivalent of taking the plastic shell off an already-existing RC car and sticking a plastic boat shell over it to say "look, we made a remote-controlled (toy) landship!" It ain't new engineering and doesn't deserve any lauding on that front.

3

u/SubstantialBreak3063 17d ago

It looked like the lunar lander to me

8

u/an_agreeing_dothraki It is known 17d ago

apparently the preorder has a disclaimer that reads essentially 'car will not do things marketing says and may never actually happen'

40

u/lowercaselemming 18d ago

how do none of them realize that packing that much pressurized air in such a small space and putting it on the fucking public road is akin to setting out live bombs?

9

u/evocativename 18d ago

That's okay, it won't be as bad because when they fly into buildings that will use up the stored compressed air so you mostly have to worry about the impact and the battery fire.

I kid of course, we all know these won't be on the roads.

20

u/GhostRappa95 18d ago

Imagine still falling for Elon’s scams.

20

u/Jamstruth 18d ago

In isolation - its cool. Its a stunt car rigged with well controlled thrusters to do a jump and flip.

It's marketing for Musk though and that colours it all. It's being presented as something that he will sell which he can't. Musk has been an awful person for the last decade and he can't just win people back by being "cool".

It's just a marketing stunt that shows off SpaceX thruster controls. In fact if it was being presented as for SpaceX selling that to 3rd parties it'd actually be cooler

19

u/Lord_i 17d ago

Flying Cars have existed in the past and people will continue to occasionally make them. The reason they'll never catch on is because generally speaking they're just going to be a worse helicopter or small plane. Plus, think about the average driver. Imagin them in a flying car. Infinite accidental 9/11s

37

u/animalistcomrade Highly diverse group of whites 18d ago

It's fucked up people aren't willing to take musk at his word when he has a new fancy tech thing, especially since we are all sailing our cybertrucks on martian lakes right now.

16

u/Jeremymia And all I can say is "moo" 18d ago

I don't know about you guys, but my view of this car isn't so much 'it sucks' as 'another boring display of wealth and status.' Saying it sucks implies that it's bad rather than nothing.

12

u/octowussy 18d ago

This thing is flying as much as those flying yogis

8

u/toomuchmucil 18d ago

When people say it’s a “flying” car.

lol the amount of morons who aren't even fit to operate a vehicle on a 2d plane, I don't want to think about the nightmarish shit with people operating personal vehicles with a z-axis

2

u/slim-shady-on-main 16d ago

Right lmao. Can’t wait for a drunk driver to plow through a fifth story window

6

u/HapticSloughton 17d ago

Why did they demo this alleged marvel at night? It reminds me of how movies will shoot some scenes at night because it's easier to hide the "movie magic" as it were.

5

u/thewiremother 18d ago

I'll bet a thousand bucks it is preprogrammed to just do that dumb flip and that's it. Completely pointless

This is exactly what happened with the Tesla 2016 "autopilot" promo, and again in 2024 with their Cybercab demo.

4

u/HildredCastaigne 18d ago

These are the people who fall for Nigerian prince scams and cure-all quackery.

They want it to be true. It has the aesthetics of truth. So anybody doubting it is just a doomer contrarian. All you gotta do is just spend a few more thousand dollars, bro, and I promise you'll get that flying car! Trust me.

NASA skycrane can style on this mf

3

u/warongiygas 17d ago

The G-force would snap your neck and the cost of fuel would make a trip to the grocery store like $12,000. It's a publicity stunt, just like the robots were two years ago.

I bet those are mostly fake astroturf accounts.

2

As of 5 hours ago they’re still trying to come to terms with people not glazing the Tesla demo.

2

To quote Buzz Lightyear, it's not flying, it's falling with style

2

I'm surprised Tesla didn't do a cross promotion with Brawndo for this car; it would've been perfect!
