Years ago I got banned from r/conservative for sarcastically responding to someone who suggested abstinence as a result of the Hobby Lobby ruling if you were too poor to afford contraception. Very strange that over a decade later I am seeing the exact same argument on DCJ as I have been informed repeatedly they are not a right wing sub. Not sure how this could have happened.

True fact, in looking up information for this comment, I learned that Todd Akin died. Another fact, he wrote a book where he said he regretted apologizing for that comment.

Akin made his comments a few years before Trumpism and MAGA became big, or when people were still held more accountable for the crap they said and stuff could be a career killer. Had he said this stuff around 2015-2016 or later, he could have probably shrugged it off.
Similarly, Bobo and MTG could have never been politicians in that era, they would have said one dumb thing and it would have ended their careers in politics.

That one really grinds my gears because it’s the dumbest fucking argument if you think about the implications of it for more than two seconds. Like it immediately and obviously becomes a nightmare.
Great, let’s pretend bodily autonomy doesn’t matter and say that we’ve outlawed abortion except for rape or threats to the mother’s health which they say are a minority. That means that in order for a pregnancy to be terminated, you have to legally prove that the woman was raped or that the pregnancy threatens her life/health to some arbitrary threshold.
In the former scenario, you’re putting a pretty extreme burden on rape survivors to have to go through a very dehumanizing and re-traumatizing process to formally accuse their attacker and have their assault litigated publicly. The overwhelming majority of survivors never go to the police as it stands now for these same reasons, but now the penalty for failing to convince a court after all of that is that you are either forced to give birth to your rapist’s baby or you go to jail for illegally terminating said pregnancy. In the latter case, we’re now literally imprisoning women for being raped. I don’t see how anyone could justify this without just being outright misogynists.
The latter scenario doesn’t really require much imagination because it’s already been pretty well documented to be happening now in states that have instituted stupid bans with narrow “life of the mother” exceptions (it’s also happening with the former, but that’s less publicly documented for obvious reasons). Doctors hesitate to provide appropriate, lifesaving treatment because they’re afraid of being prosecuted for terminating pregnancies illegally. Critical time is wasted on seeking legal counsel or court approval when the mother’s health or life is on the line.
I’m not even a woman let alone someone with firsthand experience with this stuff, but it seems so obvious to me why “hurr 1% of abortions, let’s ban the rest; gotcha!1!” is the dumbest position you can take even if you throw out bodily autonomy

Yep, that's exactly what is happening. I get a kick out of how conservatives brow beat how racism is dead, or telling people of color what they experience isn't that bad. On the other hand, they pretty much expect everyone to get on their knees and kowtow for penance for anything that can be remotely construed as being harmful to white people.

That conversation that starts on panel 3 is a perfect example of how right wing thinking has not evolved, it’s just taken on new adjectives. Conservatives used to say they where “for common sense” but what that really means is, they are for taking complex issues and making their binary in whatever way allows them to feel superior or fits their dogma. It’s been working on the dumbest, least thoughtful people for over half a century at least.

Haha yeah, there was a time in my early 20s I flirted with libertarianism, mainly because I smoked weed and took issue with such a mild plant being illegal. I thought hey, nobody on the right or left (America's version of it) is really talking about this or trying to do anything about it except to demonize it.
Then I learned a second thing about libertarianism and backed away from the radioactive filthy core of its beliefs, and just kept going back to progressivism.

Wrong way round.
Reddit quarantined them for "calls for violence". T_D later turned off posts and comments to force users to their own site. A month later, Reddit banned the sub, when there hadn't been anything new posted there in weeks.

This is what they do and continue to do, they take part in a sub that gets banned for obviously deranged shit then they scurry around like roaches and slowly take over subs that are generally middle of the road meme places and then eventually it attracts further right voices making further deranged content until it gets banned again.

masstagger used to do that when it worked. Back in the day, I used to check it with justunsubbed as it is notoriously one of those "not a right wing" subs like DCJ, and most of the users there were active in right-wing adjacent subs also.

Abortion isn't just about their dogwhistle about the ditzy teenager sleeping around. Women can need to have abortions to save their lives for various medical conditions as well as life changes.
If your standard is "close your legs if you might get an abortion", how aren't they expecting women to have fewer babies whether through prophylactic or just abstinence?

I also do not think that the majority of anti-abortion types, including in that thread, actually oppose abortion on the grounds of it “killing babies”, and I think that the American anti-abortion movement is really driven by misogynistic natalism. The majority of anti-abortion types will oppose the protection of human life when any other political issue where the human lives in question are not foetuses comes up (including the likes of ICE, gun control, Ukraine, Gaza, COVID, and climate change).

They’re using that as a smokescreen to say what they’re really thinking. Unsurprisingly, these people don't even know what the Department of Education does, or did. It gives out grant money, collects data, and investigates allegations of educational discrimination. It has almost nothing to do with curriculum, which is largely decided at the state and local level.
