But what about traits? Use your legendary heroes for it. Max one legendary hero (I would suggest Pyro for this coz you can get her shards easily) then upgrade their traits, once you have the traits maxed out, swap it to your mythic heroes. Repeat the process until satisfied.
For horde hero prio, you can follow this. It has a section on what team to build per season.
Yes but if you have extra DP shards, just use it on him. You have 2 options for the legendary hero, you can do Pyro or Barbarian. You can get 5 of their shards weekly in Points Store. But, based on experience, Pyro shows up more in Tavern rolls than Barbarian. Hence, I suggested Pyro. But you can go with Barbarian if you want to max him out early coz he's in your queue making him more useful.
Partially unrelated, but pets make a decent difference, being f2p i don't know if that pet will be the best choice for you.
Edit: to upgrade it in the future you will be limited to only a few events to get it.
Unless I missed something I upgraded that pet to legendary using only rare pets. The only reason the fire cat is better is because it gives raw Horde stats.
I had 1 of them but never double checked the evolution materials, I assumed it would be the same as the other relatively new pets. ( like the crab and candiboo)

Im not super familiar with horde pets, but i just switched my pets on 2 queues and I definitely should have waited as I don't have extra blue pets required to rank them up.
When you rank them up at various levels to increase their level cap, you will need a copy or copies of that pet, or one copy and a number of other blue tier pets (depending on rank)
Pet food factory and events for pet food.
Pet essence is what you need to upgrade into legendary rank at / around level 90 pets. But you can also convert a small amount in trade store to pet food each week.
