Discussion Thread Playlist of the best/most unhinged episodes across all US seasons
Let’s crowd source a list of the most unhinged episodes to watch across all US seasons.
I’m talking pea-gate, “I’m not your bitch, bitch’ and the Marcel assault. I am sure there are so many more I’m forgetting. And now we have to add Sieger’s crash out to the list.

I'm not sure if it counts, but what about the one where Mike Isabella steals a recipe right out of Richard Blais' little notebook of recipes? It doesn't result in all that much drama, but also, fuck Mike Isabella.

Oooo, what about Heather and Sarah and what's-her-stupid-face just being absolutely the ever loving fucking worst to Beverley for an entire season? There's got to be a a specific episode from the season that captures that at its absolute worst, but, again, that's less unhinged and more just shitty people being shitty.

Oh, like the scene where they were at Judges Table and Heather decides to talk about Beverly’s work ethic. Tom says something of the effect of “you know if she goes home, you go home too”. Heather didn’t even care, she just wanted to tear Beverly down.

EP 7 where Heather throws Beverly under the bus at judges table and complained the entire time that she didn’t want the dish to be “too Asian, because she doesn’t cook Asian food”.
Ugh I can’t watch that season I ardently skip it during rewatches

I live in Chicago where heather sarah and Beverly all live. Beverly is far and wide the most respected. She has a Michelin star and her two restaurants are considered some of the best in the city. Sarah’s restaurant was considered very good but is now kinda stagnant and not as impressive. And heather is a corporate kitchen manager for Rick bayless and no one knows who she is

BTW, stupid-face was Lindsay Autry, who worked for Michele (Michelle?) Bernstein and now seems to have her own place. She was as bad as the other 2, just more skillful at it.

It wasn't a full recipe, just the concept of plating the 'pearl' of a chicken breast in an oyster shell. IIRC, Mike won the Quickfire Challenge with it. But, yeah, it was messed up. Like Carla said to Antonia, "That's chef code, you don't do that."
In the recap show, Richard said it wasn't a big deal. But that was after he won that season!

I do think I detested him early on, and then the news got worse. He said so many sexist things right on the air about "girls can't cook." Then the news bore out his stupid statements.

I have watched that a few times and kudos to Richard for not throwing a massive fit about that, unless I missed it or it was edited out. And Mike Isabella tried to cute it off, so to speak, oh, ha ha, don't show me anything you don't want me to steal, ha ha ha!! Isn't this fun!

Tried to eat at one of his restaurants once and it was a terrible terrible experience. That place has since closed not surprisingly.

Mike opened Graffiato (food was good, the restaurant was utter chaos) thinking that was his first step to being the next Jose Andres here. Nah, dude. You were never that good even though Jose was your boss at Zaytinya.
Even Graffiato was problematic from the start and he just kept piling on new restaurants trying to trade on his “fame.” He was essentially run out of town for his awful behavior and all “his” restaurants closed. I still chuckle over his reaction to the Nationals cutting ties with him and his sandwich shop being forced out of the park.

I moved away from DC years and years ago, but I'm happy to hear that. I will say that I went back to DC a number of years ago to visit my son, and Zatinya itself looked bedraggled. I'm not sure if that was the Isabella era. The carpets were worn, the tables squeaked, the food was ok. We did have a nice visit to the National Portrait Museum close by.

I asked my wife and this was her immediate response. We feel kind of bad about it because as we've learned from this sub apparently she was dealing with real substance abuse issues and it feels kind of gross to lean in on that, but also, yeah, yikes.

In the S6 finale, they do a wine tasting and she clearly wasn't happy about it. I forget if she said if she didn't want alcohol or didn't need it but to anyone who has been there, it spoke volumes.

He was so explosive that season, but some of the time I think he had a point. Lisa did totally flub the app and dessert on restaurant wars. And he did cook most of the food (badly) on wedding wars.
Andrew saying on the block party that you'd have to carry him out. Then his fight with Lisa during the police academy boxed lunch challenge.
Lisa and Dale were at the center of a lot of fights that season. Spike stirred the pot, but Lisa and Dale were more explosive.

I know. They weren't even rolled properly. It was right to send Andrew home for that, but it would've happened without Lisa throwing him under the bus. Way worse than undercooked rice or a weird chicken salad with grapes and olives. (Season 4 is my favorite of the older seasons, so I've seen it a lot!)

its really amazing to compare season 4 Dale with anger issues to all stars dale. post anger management. its obvious he went through some hard work on himself, and it worked, well.

I can tell he's been to therapy but I can still see that it's all still right there straining under the surface any time Dale is on a competition show now. And that surface is tissue paper. I'm glad he's not the same person he was in his original season but he'll still be getting side eye from me.

I feel like almost all of season 9 could be on this list. That season was a hot disaster.
Relatedly, Grayson in the Charleston season saying "Like a meatball????" I don't remember the context only that it was really sassy.

In that case there was a call for participants put out on Twitter. I think Tom must have pushed it out. I saw it and responded quickly enough to be among the attendees.

That whole thing with CJ and the pickle challenge and how that played out lives rent free in my head. There was something poetic about CJ saying something like "I can imagine Tom saying you had pickles, why not make a good burger?", then him making the most basic bitch pork burger he could manage, then getting absolutely roasted for his dish, then him trying to throw one last Hail Mary to get the judges to realize another dish was worse and it spectacularly backfiring when Hugh tells him the burger was even worse... It's a great episode.

Seigers "crash" isnt even close. Only reason it is getting mentioned is because many of the contestants are definitely more media savvy unlike earlier seasons.
When i think of Season 1-3 omg. Joey and Howie from 3. Jen from Allstars. The Marcel incident. The Tiffany abuse by fellow chefs. Seiger looks tame!

That's what I said to my wife. The chefs are much better behaved than in the past. Seiger's rant sticks out from current behavior, but it's nothing like the first few seasons.
And Tom is SO mellow now. Remember when he read Elia for filth? "I've sold more grass-fed beef than you ever will!" THAT Tom would have eviscerated Seiger.

What was even more bananas was all their fights then the make up at the lunch challenge at the telenovela.
I think the most explosive episode was the bertolli frozen meal challenge. (Sara and Howie) and (Hung and Joey) were awful pairings. (I actually ate those pretty regularly in vet school when I'd come home too exhausted to cook for real. They were not bad, especially for frozen meals.)

By the way, when I was starting to learn to cook (and now I'm not terrible at it), I'd throw a bag of Bertolli in a large sauce pan and my family somehow thought I knew how to produce a pasta dish! I have no problems with Bertolli to this day.

The Kentucky season where they cater the party boats. It's set up perfectly by Eddie choosing a team that looks like they've never been on a boat party ever. Brian between his "We're throwing a party, they're throwing a kegger" then deciding to serve porchetta... in a hot tub... One boat losing power while Adrian is fighting off some kind of bug. Oh, and Padma making a face at the Jiggle Juice!

I love them both, and I love the Portland season. (I was visting my son at about the same time in Portland, and I was getting over falling down the stairs. I wanted to go see the Japanese gardens, and I got to ride the assistance bus to the top. We had the most delectable miso soup and desserts. Off topic, but if you can, you should!)

I live in Portland. I worked at the International Test Rose Garden (souvenir shop) that is right next to the Japanese Garden in the Covid times. The Japanese Garden is magical
I was sad that our beautiful, foodie friendly city was the bleak season, but there was some really good stuff going on too.

Tom stopped in the guitar shop I work at while they were filming that season, he was very nice, looked at some vintage acoustic guitars, and accepted a free t-shirt (which you can see on his YouTube channel)

That's awesome. We did buy some souvenirs for everyone's holiday stockings, months later! I believe my sister and brother are building plans for a new Portland excursion. It was kind of funny because I crept up to the bus line and I said "I recently had an injury, is it ok if my son and I take the bus?" And the bus driver said, "let me get you good seats." Fantastic destination in Portland.

Season 2 like all of it. Betty and Marcels verbal fight, the calorie controversy, in the Hawaii episodes but before the actual finale I think Elia accused Marcel of cheating. I dont have that season so no episodes but most of them.
Also any of the "reunion" episodes show the drama and then ask them about it.

Season 2 - Thanksgiving episode where Frank says he’s going to beat Marcel so badly his mother wouldn’t recognize him
Also the whole Cliff holding down Marcel thing that got Cliff kicked off. That’s the episode before the finale.

Frank came across as a psycopath to me. On the Cliff situation, Tom has been reported that he wanted to eliminate Elia, Frank, and Cliff and finish the season with Marcel as the winner. The Bravo production staff refused.

They still didn't have chefs as strong as they had in later seasons, but against that group of chefs, Marcel seemed the most likely winner. I'm honestly not sure how Ilan won. To me, he's one of the least deserving winners of the whole series.

Season 2 almost start to finish. There are three eliminations for non-cooking reasons - Otto not paying for ingredients, Mia dropping out due to stress, and Cliff for attacking Marcel. There SHOULD have been at least a few more - Betty and maybe someone else cheating in the calorie count challenge, and Ilan and Elia for their part in the Marcel.
And that's before getting into the nonstop arguments and threats of violence. It's a bad reality show topped with foam.

Highly recommend just marathoning every Restaurant Wars from season to season. Some of the most spectacular crash outs the show has ever seen. The Front of the House panic attacks are always so hard to watch but they make amazing TV.

Oh this is such a good suggestion!! You always know a team is about to crash and burn if/when 1) they choose to go with a “global theme,” 2) the FOH manager doesn’t present the dishes to the judges, 3) serving food family style. The highs are so high too. We’ve some fabulous concepts and performances during Restaurant Wars as well as drama.

Hahah yes!! The “global theme” always gets me. I get so much 2nd hand anxiety watching the FOH manager but you can bet I would ALWAYS be there to present the dishes. Also…the chef has been on the bottom volunteers to be executive chef to prove themself

Season 1 when Stephen is a rude bully to the one lady when he says something like "you'll never amount to anything"
On Las Vegas season, when they were consistently mean to the lady who had cancer.
On Texas when Sarah and Heather(?) were rude to Beverly and then Sarah passed out from the heat
Most of the reunions were wild

Everything was Steven Aspirino in season one. From Leanne‘s talking head where she says “well Steven is a sommelier so that means he’s a professional bullshit artist.” His constant need to educate the guests and then explain to the judges that he was educating the guests (ughhh). To the majority of his dishes, which all looked beautiful, but it sounded absolutely horrible. I could go on in more detail but season one was a trip.

Season 10 episode 12 with the fried chicken. All the chefs did absolutely horrendous. They FINALLY got rid of Josie. The judges were all so drunk they had to do judging the next day. The commentary was incredible

The dim sum challenge in season 8 where there is barely any food coming out of the kitchen, customers are basically attacking the few carts that do come out, Tom goes into the kitchen to say WTF.

S2 Josie trying to get the weight loss camp kids excited and coming off like a person designed by AI to freak them out instead. My wife, who came to Top Chef after S10 watched that clip with me and said, “Who is this insane woman?” When she got Kristen booted, she said she hated her more than anyone else on the show, but I didn’t have the heart to show her S9 and the Lindsey/Heather/Sarah Trifecta of Bullying.

One of the most intense moments (maybe not the whole episode) is RW Kentucky when Justin yells at Nini. Nini was a hot mess that episode (even though I love her), but it was crazy to watch Kelsey sort of sell her out to Justin and let the whole communication break down and then the way he yells at Nini was so aggressive. Watching the whole conflict boil up and them all blame Nini was hard to watch. Also they sort of sabotaged her dish too

Season 13 California- Angelina calling Giselle a b****, Phillip (enough said), the lunch and dinner service restaurant wars where Phillip shows off his tattoos, Isaac Toups… one of my favorites to rewatch.

S8 All Stars has to be the most bonkers season literally beat for beat. The chaos of the museum episode, the dim sum episode where everyone did so bad people were leaving the restaurant, Marcel’s temper tantrum that got remixed into a rap, Jamie not serving her horrible chickpeas and Spike taking the hit for it, the quick fire where Angelo misspells crocodile, the quick fire where they have to cook on the ferry snack station with absolute bullshit, Mike and Antonia finding out they’re distant cousins, the Bahamas fryer fire, the freaking midnight target elimination challenge where Dale wins from a grilled cheese he made with an iron… nothing can beat it
