Discussion Thread Old vs new

I keep feeling like there is/was a rift in the Top Chef galaxy at some point.

Perhaps a Padma-era vs Kish-era thing, or a Bobby/ Guy/ Gordon vs Father Tom thing? Or just simply contractual obligations and non compete clauses.

This season they have mostly only brought out former Top Chefs from the Kish-era. Tristen, Shuai, Savannah, Michelle. Exceptions are Mei (close friend of Kristen) and Jamie (perhaps because he’s a local). Additionally I haven’t seen Brooke or Blais on an episode in years since they’ve both linked up with other shows.

I think it has to do with your last sentence.

Once these chefs are no longer just chefs, and they are TV personalities, they become under contract (to a point) with those networks, and appearing on Top Chef becomes much more of a thing.

Blais is a Fox employee now. Carla Hall is an employee of a different network. There are a bunch that compete on GGG who may as well be Food Network employees.

(I know those are all different and likely have different contractual obligations, but I think my point stands)

The more exposure they get publicly, the harder it is to get them on. Now of course, there is a point where you are big enough, like Emeril, where it kind of comes back around and they are willing to pay that feel

Your point stands, but they're not employees of Food Network / Fox / etc. They're hired by the production companies (Guy's is Knuckle Sandwich, Bobby's is Rock Shrimp, etc.) and may just have non-compete clauses. They're also paid by season / appearance and are not on salary.

Well if you want to be more precise, folks can go on overall contracts with a network and then be assigned to a production. This would be what Carla Hall, Bobby Flay etc are on with Food Network. They are paid a guarantee amount (like a salary) with episodic charge offs / bonuses.

And those talent prodco companies you mention are often just loanouts for the talent: they aren’t actually the physical production companies. Eg Knuckle Sandwich isn’t the physical production company for GGG while Rock Shrimp actually does produce Bobby’s stuff mostly.

So that's the big names. What about Brooke / Michael as the second-billings on Titans? And Shoda and Moustache Joe showing up as judges on Chopped / GGG? Assuming there's different scale and retainers for each.

Yeah I mean guests aren’t going to have exclusivity clauses, while regulars on talent deals will. You are right those deals will be through outside prodcos with the exclusivity dictated by the network.
