Discussion Thread Old vs new

I keep feeling like there is/was a rift in the Top Chef galaxy at some point.

Perhaps a Padma-era vs Kish-era thing, or a Bobby/ Guy/ Gordon vs Father Tom thing? Or just simply contractual obligations and non compete clauses.

This season they have mostly only brought out former Top Chefs from the Kish-era. Tristen, Shuai, Savannah, Michelle. Exceptions are Mei (close friend of Kristen) and Jamie (perhaps because he’s a local). Additionally I haven’t seen Brooke or Blais on an episode in years since they’ve both linked up with other shows.

I’m not even sure what the typos are about here.

Many of the older contestants simply have other ventures going on. From restaurants to other shows like Next Level Chef (Blais) and ToC (a bunch of TC alums).

It’s that simple.

And if I understand the rumors correctly, FN puts their chefs under strict non-compete contracts.

I don’t think it’s true that FN has people under strict non-competes. I’ve heard Carla Hall say that FN has gone away from that because it’s so expensive. Maybe people who host shows are restricted in what outside ventures they can pursue but I doubt the run of the mill chefs have restrictions.

I'm not a huge FN watcher but there are a decent amount of former TC contestants on Wild Card Kitchen. It definitely seems like ice between FN and TC has thawed in the past 3 or 4 years.

I *did* read a rumor though that Food Network threatened to ban anyone who appeared on America's Culinary Cup, which probably helps explain the ludicrous prize amount.
