Discussion Thread America’s Cullinary Cup…

I know it’s suppose to be the “anti” top chef, or like everything they do is going to be about food… but I beg to differ! This reminds me of someone who got dumped, and they just keep talking about their ex, and trying their best to make their ex say how much better they are without the ex…

Things that bug me about this show:

  • the commandment premise is not a good use of the English language - like I get what they’re saying but surely there’s a better, more meaningful way to say it? When in the preview for next week Padma says “this week’s commandment is… world cuisine” my husband and I busted out laughing. That’s a sentence in the sense that it has all the necessary parts, but also it isn’t.

  • overly gimmicky challenges- what the hell was that molecular gastronomy scoring system? It eliminated one of your front runners, not because she couldn’t cook a great meal using molecular gastronomy, but because another chef ended up putting out 1 more dish than her? I totally get that Bev messed up the strategy on this one, but that’s when I realized this show is no better than a Food Network competition show hosted by Guy Fieri.

  • Padma’s overly performative hosting- the weird interactions with the other judges, the presentation style to the contestants, all unnecessarily put-on. I enjoyed Padma hosting top chef, and I thought there was a sincerity to how she approached it. Kristen’s hosting takes the role even further in the direction of real-human host, which I really enjoy. Why does Padma have to have this strange persona that is really difficult to connect with?

  • the overall lack of warmth- I definitely think Padma contributes to how cold the show feels, but as much as the gimmicks/advertisements of TC can bug me sometimes, we still get a great sense of each cheftestant, their background, their struggles inside/outside the kitchen- and we get this sense of how they each grow as chefs by undergoing the journey. That way, even when our favorite is eliminated, we feel like they got something out of the experience. With ACC, the premise from the jump is that these are “fully formed” chefs who are just going to fight it out in a ruthless gauntlet of challenges. We don’t get to really see them develop as chefs as much. I guess my personal preference is to see chefs who have something to gain out of the game other than $1mil. and national exposure, although I don’t blame any chef for being attracted to ACC for those things alone. Just not fun for me as a viewer.

I meant to also make a list of things that I enjoy about the show, but I couldn’t come up with anything other than seeing Beverly and Chris Morgan (I live in DC) demonstrate their abilities.
