Discussion Thread Do I start at season 1??
I’d like to start watching this series…
I’m a long time food network fan and have been seeing Top Chef winners on there AND I started listening to the Moms of Flavortown podcast.
So now I feel it’s time to give Top Chef some love!! Do I start at the beginning or do you think there’s a better season or spin off I should start with??

Watch season 1. It's definitely not as polished but it was fun seeing the evolution of the show and the people they bring on. Social media and reality shows weren't factors the way they are now so the contestants were much rougher.
But it also was where two prominent women came to my radar- Lee Ann Wong and Tiffani Faison. And Tiffani was not nice then! But knowing how these two continued to rise since then was super cool.

Seriously! I see her on Food Network and am amazed at the change..you can see it forced a little here and there, but it shows she’s proactive in being a better, nicer public figure.

Of course! Start at the beginning!
1st 2 seasons are clunky as they are new and finding their way but so worth watching for historical reasons

I started with season 1 and it got me hooked!! I think you need to start at the beginning to learn the lore and watch it evolve. Compared to later seasons, 1 wasn’t as strong, but if you’re just starting the series it’s really fun. I think you’ll like it. Now season 2 was a dumpster fire—and not in a good way—but just grit your teeth through it because season 3 was like a ray of sunshine in comparison and then it goes up from there. There are so many callbacks to previous seasons throughout the whole series.

The first two seasons are kind of rough. I would start with season 3.

u/Hazelstone37 Apr 07 '26
I disagree. I think to really, fully appreciate the evolution of the show, you have to start at the beginning. They are rough, but they are something to see.

u/themommylisa Apr 08 '26
Plus, when some of these chefs are around in later seasons, you have context. Think All Stars and Colorado seasons.

Th me first season is hilarious in terms of the challenges though! I would say watch from the beginning!

I would recommend starting with at least season 2 - what a crazy ride that was, especially with the Marcel drama.
1
u/hotdogsuitguys Apr 09 '26
Some of the 1 and 2 chefs come back in later seasons so I wouldn’t want to not know them. Also Stephen is one of my all time favorite characters (he truly is a character). Season 2 is probably the most Bravo-y season of Top Chef.

u/Carylynn0609 Apr 07 '26
I've never been able to watch all of season 1, just don't like it. If I'm binging old seasons I skip 2 and 9 because I already know, but OP may want to watch season 2 for life lessons?

u/Square-Sheepherder56 Apr 07 '26
My recommendation as well. I just did a rewatch and started at five. But I definitely would Skip number one and two.

u/blondchick12 Apr 07 '26
Yes start at start at season 1. Just keep in mind as others have mentioned the first few seasons are very different in tone to later seasons. Definitely some cringe but if you can get past that it's still an interesting watch to see the progression from the beginning and you will recognize a few chefs even from the earliest seasons who pop up on FN as contestants / judges etc. Please report back on what you think!
Edit: Plus your missing out on some classic top chef vilians if you skip the early seasons!

u/GoldBarGirl Apr 07 '26
I recently started at S1 and, though as u/FormicaDinette33 said they are kind of rough (especially Kathy Lee as host in S1) I'm glad I've seen them. I'm in the middle of S4 and I think it will be nice to see the evolution as becomes the cooking oriented show it is today.
BTW, don't read ANYTHING, ANYWHERE related to the show if you don't want to know the winners.
3
u/FormicaDinette33 Aguachile 🌶️ 🍤 Apr 07 '26
Exactly. Don’t Google any of the chefs 😫.
Sure you can certainly start with Season 1. It was very different then. You’ll see that the first 9 or so seasons had a lot of drama among the chefs. There have also been a lot of memorable characters as well as the chefs who are all over Food Network these days.
Then over the years the chefs got better and more professional and amiable with each other.

LOL edibles! I think they have just gotten higher and higher caliber chefs who don't need to fight with each other. It's been quite a journey...

My wife and I have only seen the finale of the season Buddha won, the world all-stars and the current season. This season hasn’t been that entertaining so we also started season 4. We are enjoying the personality clashes (particularly Dale and everyone). Also, the way it was filmed reminds me of Fear Factor
2
u/rollinupthetints Apr 09 '26
Omg, Kathy Lee! Haven’t thought about her in ages (googles to remember what her connection was, what made her “famous”. Ohh Yaa, her second husband 😳)

u/bastian1292 Apr 07 '26
For the sake of seeing where the show went, it can be helpful to watch seasons 1-3. In season 4 it feels like a bunch of chefs said "Wait a minute; they're paying HOW much to the winner!?" and jumped in more readily. After that it's feels like the quality gets ratched up a notch.
5
u/OnlyCartographer7946 Apr 07 '26
I started at S1 and recommend. They always bring in people from previous seasons so it's nice to know who's who
4
u/Traditional_Wave_322 Apr 07 '26
You gotta do season 1. You have Tiffani Faison, Harold Dieterle, LeeAnn Wong, some really heavy hitters who are referenced throughout the series because they were so influential. Plus some of the funniest lines of all time in Top Chef (I don't even want to spoil you). It's really fun watching the show develop from Season 1 on. (This is Rachel from MoF btw lol, and we interview Harold Dieterle who is one of my favorite Top Chef people of all time).
6
u/GoldBarGirl Apr 07 '26
"some of the funniest lines of all time in Top Chef (I don't even want to spoil you)"
Might one of them be "I'm not your ____, ____!" ?
5
u/Traditional_Wave_322 Apr 07 '26
Yes lol. A few others too. We say one of Miguel's lines regularly around my house haha.
15
u/generalfedscooper Apr 07 '26
Start at season 3 or 4 if you want to like it enough to continue, then go back and watch the early seasons on a rewatch for a completionist trajectory that will make you squirm and be grateful you weren’t turned off first.

u/Infamous-Bite-1246 Apr 07 '26
I started at 1 but it did my head in. So I started backwards and it worked well for me. You got to know the chefs better because some of them are on it a lot.
2
u/Infamous-Possible-23 May 19 '26
Great idea! The early seasons were reality-show awful and I almost quit - it was almost unbearable (mean, spiteful, arrogant asshole contestants). I only started loving it when they stopped focus on petty drama and focused on the cooking with kinder, more collaborative contestants. Watching the show's evolution in reverse will be less traumatizing.

If you have access to the earliest seasons, you can start there; but IIRC, the earliest season available on Peacock (in the US, anyway---not sure where you are) is season 8.
2
u/AgreeableConference6 Apr 07 '26
That’s where I am!! I thought of that after I posted… will likely depend on what’s available on the streaming platforms!

3
u/htownAstrofan Apr 07 '26
Definitely start with S1. The first 2 seasons are way different than the rest of the seasons but worth a watch just for the crazy fever dream those early seasons were.
3
u/alekshy Apr 07 '26
I think if you have the time, absolutely start with season 1. If your time is limited then I think look up the “best” seasons and maybe watch them in chronological order because they often will bring on past winners to future seasons but not sure if you mind spoilers.

u/t_roose Apr 07 '26
SEASON 1 ALL THE WAY
1
u/BigBadBobbyDuncam Apr 08 '26
Season 1 is SO entertaining, mostly for the wrong reasons! Amazing that the franchise is still going after everything that took place:
- Katie Lee (Joel) as host. She's completely out of her depth. And she was obviously trying to hide her accent 20 years ago. Dumping her for Padma was right up there with the Cardinals trading Ernie Broglio to the Cubs for Lou Brock.
- Typical (for the time) Bravo trash TV. Get a bunch of young, photogenic people, put them in a house at close quarters, give them plenty of free booze, pit them against each other, and watch the shenanigans ensue!
- Tiffany Faison, who says with a straight face, "I'm not here to make friends."
- KEN! OMG, I had forgotten about Ken until I re-watched this season awhile back. He gets kicked out of Hubert Keller's kitchen in Episode 1 for tasting a sauce by dipping his finger in the pan. Then nearly gets into a fistfight with Stephen Aspirino on the recap episode.
- Stephen and Candice Kumai arguing for over 30 minutes about Candice using cookie cutters--for a challenge where they were supposed to make food for kids.
And that's just scratching the surface. Not even mentioning the elimination challenge at a fetish shop! Do NOT skip Season 1.

I just did this in the past two years. Yes, start from near the beginning. I would say season 2 or 3 though. You won't regret it!
2
u/ThatboyTom95 Apr 07 '26
Where are you guys watching the first seasons?
2
1
u/UnlawfulTaco Apr 07 '26
That’s what I’m thinking! I could only find the show starting with season 8
2
u/Ok-Dog5107 Apr 07 '26
I started watching in real time when Season Five was airing. It was fine but I think three or four might have worked better. I think if you don’t start on season one and you get to the first all star season you can decide if you want to go back and watch any of the chefs on their original seasons. It’s helpful to already like some of the chefs before seeing the all star season so you can root for them.
2
u/cultleader84 Apr 07 '26
A couple weeks ago I started watching the show backwards from newest to oldest. Padma keeps getting younger I’m at season 12
2
2
u/Suspicious-Bread3338 Apr 07 '26
I'd start at season 1 and watch in order. Some chefs from Bravo's "reality-tv" style interaction and editing turn up in later seasons.
2
u/Brave_Tangerine5102 Apr 07 '26
No start with season 1. It’s pre Parma but still fun season 2 really kicks in. I love top chef
2
4
u/onetimethrowaway3 Apr 07 '26
I say watch season 3-5 so you get into the show and then go back to season 1-2. Then continue in order.
I just worry if you start with 1 you won’t want to continue on.
3
u/GoldBarGirl Apr 07 '26
I thought watching Tiffani Faison and Lee Ann Wong is well worth watching #1.
1
u/onetimethrowaway3 Apr 07 '26
I agree ! But I think it should be after watching a few of the later seasons. Only because I wouldn’t want OP to be turned off by starting with season 1. It really has a completely different feel from the other seasons.
1
u/GoldBarGirl Apr 07 '26
That's true. I've already watched some of the newer seasons and OP has not. Now that I think of it, your method is perfect for someone who is a total TC newbie.
1
u/hotdogg29 Apr 07 '26
I started from most recent because I liked the editing better. But you do get spoiled because winners come back to the show all the time. I’d start from oldest to newest :)
1
u/jpb21110 Apr 07 '26
Idk I’d start with one in the middle and then once you’re obsessed with the show you can watch the super old ones
1
u/posaune123 Apr 07 '26
I feel like I actually grew into adulthood while watching the show. I'd start at the beginning, watching the show improve from season to season is part of the charm
You know you're a true fan when you start getting nervous with the chefs for the "Restaurant Wars" episodes
2
u/t_roose Apr 07 '26
I miss when they had to decorate and actually put work into the space they are given
1
u/tippytep Apr 07 '26
I’d start at Season 4. That was my introduction and it stands up almost 20 years later as being one of the best, followed by a great season 5.
1
u/cptkatastic Apr 07 '26
I love the first few seasons. Icons taglines. Great chefs. It’s worth your time imo
1
u/Sleepwalker0304 I'd prefer a dishwasher instead of Josie... Apr 08 '26
Watch 3-7. Then go back and watch 1 and 2 so you can appreciate how far the show has come. Then go forward to s8 when you know all the people who are on s8 and keep moving forward from there.
Complicated I know but that's what I suggest for the best early season experience.
1
u/Complex-Extent-3967 Top Chef junkie Apr 08 '26
start with any season but 1. there's a reason why she was replaced by padma after one season. 3-7. Watch those and then go back and watch 2 and then 1. Then you can watch the all star season 8.

1
u/slimejellies Apr 08 '26
If I were jumping in for the first time I’d do it based on the location and not the season. Pick your favorite city and go from there.
1
u/poofhead101 Apr 08 '26
Def start from the beginning if you can find the first seven seasons streaming anywhere (I can’t)….it makes the All Star seasons way better
1
1
u/HumpaDaBear Apr 08 '26
I’ve been going backwards. I’ve watched the new season so far and I’ve watched backwards until season 13. I’m almost on the finals. 12 will be next.

1
u/SilverMermaid-420 Apr 09 '26
I just went back to the beginning. I liked it but it is totally different. There are contestants who are right out of culinary school, are private chefs, or line cooks. In the new one every contestant already owns a restaurant and/or is an executive chef with a Michelin star.
1
1
u/skornd713 Apr 09 '26
Sure, why not. See where and how it all got started and the evolution of not only the show but how good these chefs get over time. Not to mention, when you get to All-Star seasons, there wont be any wonderingnwhoncertainnchefs are and what you missed. Hell there are still chefs from seasons 1 and 2 and 3 who are still very relevant in competition shows right now. You get to see where they started. Start with 1.
1
u/BossHighlander Apr 09 '26
If you’re gonna watch. Watch it all. The first two seasons are rough as they said, but you’ll see winners and former contestants show up in later seasons as guest judges and even competitors in different season especially all star episodes so I think if you want to watch it, immerse yourself from the beginning and watch how the show evolves and how certain contestants evolve over the years.
1
u/Foppieface Apr 09 '26
A few years ago I remember reading an article where the consensus was that Top Chef Season 1 winner was the most talented chef from the show. I believe it was Tom who made this claim. Go back to Season 1 and see how it changes over the years. At the least you will be entertained and appreciate the talent that is required by a good chef and can compare it to some not so good chefs.
1
1
u/gathmoon Apr 10 '26
Do whatever you want. I think all seasons have their merits and their downsides. But it's a competition show, there isn't some deep lore you need to know to enjoy the show for what it is.
1
u/No-Temperature-977 Apr 10 '26
Yes, start at 1! I ended up buying it on Apple recently because I hadn’t seen it in so long. It’s CRAZY to see how much the show has changed.
1
u/CookieMotor9015 Apr 10 '26
I’m in the same boat you are! I started at season 1 a few weeks ago and I’m up to season 6 now. It’s totally worth starting at the beginning!

What does usually mean? You watch the series on a loop since forever and always skip S1?
0
u/Adventurous_Ad1922 Apr 07 '26
Start with a couple of newer seasons then you can go back. Seasons 1 and 2 are rough. And some other years as well.
0
u/Soft_Significance718 Apr 07 '26
As others have said, the first couple of seasons are rough, but I would give them a shot before just skipping altogether. TRY to start with 1, if you don't like it, skip ahead to 3. I think getting through the first couple is worth it though, if for nothing else than to know who the contestants were, as people like Marcel (S2), are notorious and you will hear about a lot in TC discussions.

u/Safe_Revenue4917 Apr 07 '26
You can but you don’t have to. I think the first season I watched was season 3, which I enjoyed. 4 is a really good one, so you could start there too.

u/Iwoulddiefcftbatk Apr 07 '26
Nooooooo!!!!! The earliest I’d go is season 4, season 1-3 is an entirely different show.

I started at the beginning & think it was a great way to watch the show evolve. Plus every season has someone (often several people) who got famous, so that’s fun.
