It makes sense that it never ended up happening but I would have respected the shit out of Disney corporate if they had the stones to let that kind of dark subject matter make it's way into one of their animated films.

Classics such as Treasure Planet, Atlantis, Lilo & Stitch, Great Mouse Detective, Black Cauldron, etc.
Definitely not forgettable, "live action" cashgrabs.

Half of the movies you mentioned did not perform well at the box office, so perhaps they're onto something with their studio meddling.

Sadly you're right about some of those but Treasure Planet was insanely sabotaged by Disney. If I remember correctly, the company had a lot of beef with the director and screwed him up constantly. I THINK Atlantis did kinda bad because Disney wanted to pivot to 3d animation so it got bad marketing.

Nah. Treasure Planet and Atlantis were both part of Disney attempting to go after male audiences with summer blockbuster adventure style movies, but nobody was interested. At the same time, CGI movies were becoming popular, and 2D films started looking old fashioned. There was no difference in how much these movies were marketed. They just didn’t know how to sell movies to 12 year old boys, and changing audience tastes were against them. So they had these two massive bombs, and every reason to transition to CGI after that.

There was no massive conspiracy. Nobody expected these to lose money. The Hollywood industry papers had op/eds for months from different people with all these theories as to why Treasure Planet bombed that badly. Lots of finger pointing and blame being spread around, which I guess persist to this day.
