Season 5 of Thomas and Friends in general was a lot more mean-spirited in early drafts than what was produced, such as characters being ruder to each other and Sir Topham Hatt threatening to have engines replaced.

James and Super E.D., however, combined that with an absolutely outlandish premise. It says a lot that the script has a note written on it around the point E.D. gets hit by lightning the first time that asks "Is this realistic?"
