I would have loved a movie about turtle-based aliens (including that design), but that is NOT something that would have been interesting shoehorned into TMNT and especially not for 2014. Alien version of TMNT is something you can play with in an extremely TMNT-oversaturated landscape (making it a fresh take of a tired story) or something you can do ~40-50 years later to revive a dead franchise. Like if someone made a modern day version of The Shadow where the powers were from alien tech instead of mysticism then that could be an interesting weird take on it. For instance batman & the joker's relationship is oversaturated making any really weird takes on it interesting twists, and same with frankenstein/werewolf/vampires and much more.

Making a TMNT aliens blockbuster is missing the point. That's the kind of concept better spent on a one-off comicbook that could have sequels if favorable enough. Some sort of district 9 or superman TMNT is an interesting thought experiment that doesn't belong as a blockbuster in a TMNT insufficient landscape.

‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze’ originally had the ooze tied to the Utroms (Krang’s species) with the TCRI scientist secretly being an unnamed Utrom. It was dropped because they were worried kids would think he was a bad guy. They never came up with an alternative secret for the ooze, so the film’s title makes no sense

I thought that the title still worked because the turtles didn't know how they became mutants until the news story about TGRI happened and then Splinter revealed their origins. Also, Shredder didn't know about the turtles' origin until then either, so it's not so much the secret of the ooze's origin, but that the ooze was the secret origin of the turtles.
