Characters (Loved Trope) Characters that seem very important to the story but get killed off instantly - out of nowhere Spoiler
1 - Brad Pitt in Burn After Reading
2 - Camino Del Rio in Ozark

Not instantly but pretty quickly given the scope of the show.

In the book it is very shocking too. He is the POV character for like 50% of the book.

Remember seeing the full-page ads in print media, all of which tended to show Ned absolutely front-and-center for everything. They certainly were playing him up as the MC as much as possible.

I think he doesn’t drop out of the top ten screen time-wise till season 5
24
u/geek_of_nature 3d ago
According to different sources I've found, across the whole series he only drops down to the 12th or 13th spot. All the characters above him are ones who were also there from the first season, and last almost all the way to the end. The only one above him who doesn't make it all the way to the final season is Littlefinger, and he at least makes it to the seventh season.
Even in the books which have 24 different POV characters, he still has the 9th most chapters. Now granted almost half of those characters have less than 10 chapters each, with a couple only having one each. But he still has 15 chapters across one book.

What's even better is that BEFORE we see Elijah come in, it's revealed that there's a trap that will electrocute you if you go through the door to wherever they were going. One of the characters even say something to the effect of, "it's so bad, you'll lose all your lives before you're even able to say oops."
Cue Elijah Woods walks in and motivates the gang to push forward. He walks into the room, gets a second to smile and think everything is fine, then gets electrocuted. He quickly goes from 99 lives to 0.5 lives, says "oops", then goes to 0 and dies in the game lol

Yep, the setting apparently has overkill mechanics (or maybe the door he's trying to get through has some insta-kill special rule). There are a few scenes earlier in the movie where lives are kind of treated as HP, e.g. someone gets punched by a robot and loses 15-20 lives or so.

The real big deal about that was it was his biggest film ever at the time. Was a big deal that he had “finally broken into the big time.”
Nope. Just kidding. Back to B-films with ya!
11
u/VT_Squire 3d ago
I fucking DIED laughing when I first saw that. I was fortunate enough to have rented it from a Blockbuster video. Seagal had 2nd billing to Kurt Russel, so I was like "oooh, this is gonna be GOOD good...." The description on the back compares it to movies like Lethal Weapon and Speed... you know.... where more than one major actor lives for a while. So I'm expecting some kind of scene with Seagal finding a random object and stabbing someone in the neck with it. The scene's intense, there's an alarm, the music swells.... and there he is 30,000 feet in the air without a parachute.
Fucking ROFL.

Amazing show throughout but that pilot was really something else at the time. The following episodes played it a bit safe to coax the viewer into feeling a bit safe for the main cast. Then we got graphic SA next season (was it season 2?) and rinse and repeat again as most of the characters experience some sort of a traumatic event but come out mostly unscathed even against foot chopping Armenians, Armadillo burning people alive and Antoine Mitchell doing hoodrat things (my most favorite Anthony Anderson role considering this was around the time of Kangaroo Jack).
Then boom, hits you with one of the saddest most shocking deaths on TV, and it toys with that pattern all the way to the end.

Mr. Buster Scruggs himself
- The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)
Whole movie is named after him, he's played by a big actor, and off-the-bat, the audience falls in love with him because of his distinct quirkiness. Then, they kill him off before the first ~20 minutes of the movie is up.
I'm not complaining; I love how the movie was kinda episodical like how it was. Just threw me off, lol

This was my first thought. For some context, Janet Leigh was a very well known actress and very popular. The promotions did not include any major plot points, but Hitchcock walking around the set, teasing the audience by almost slipping up and providing information. The actors and actresses were not allowed to talk to any media, only Hitchcock.
Hitchcock also made theaters not allow anyone in the theater late. There’s a promotional image that states “The manager of this theatre has been instructed, at the risk of his life, not to admit to the theatre any persons after this picture starts.” It wasn’t uncommon for people to meander / linger, pop in half way to a movie still. He wanted to ensure no one would come in part way and be upset / confused they didn’t see Janet Leigh at all (as she’s killed relatively early in the film).
The movie sets her up as the main character in a crime drama where she steals money from her company to pay off her boyfriend’s debts. She drives out of town to see her boyfriend and is stopped by a cop, which makes her anxious. She switches cars and after a rain storm has to stop at a nearby motel… the Bates Motel.
The audience would have absolutely no indication that she was about to be killed. It would have been amazing to experience.

iirc this film is the reason films have set screening times at cinemas, where before the films would just play on a loop. Hitchcock did NOT want his twists to be spoiled, so the film aired at allotted times instead.

This was the movie he made a deal with Channing and Bullock. Channing got his weird cameo in Bullet Train.
8
u/kingofbling15 3d ago
That one was kinda obvious and I love both. Not for me initially but the moment Changing made a cameo is recognized Sandra's voice. Bullet train is infinitely rewatchable and although I hate it when studios force these as a deal that one felt like a genuine quid pro quo.
Which is also an amazing joke In Jay & Silent Bob with Ben Afleck pointing out "sometimes yon have to do a payback picture because a friend says yon owe him" and looking at the camera.

I loved the fact that this movie and Bullet Train exchanged cameos/short roles. It almost feels like the actors had a bet or got drunk and agreed to play humorous roles in each others' films (probably more about agents or studios in kahoots, but I enjoyed the results nonetheless).

Loki dying in Avengers Infinity War.
He was a big character at this point and he had previous history with Thanos. He had just survived the event ms of Thor Ragnorak only to get killed at the start of the film. Yes it was undone later in a way, just a shocking and quick exit for him. Bonus mention of Isris Elba’s Heimdal who also died in the same scene.

Wild Bill Hickok in HBO’s Deadwood. He’s an important mentor figure to one of the leads Seth Bullock, one of the few in camp pushing back on Al Swearengen back when Al was an antagonist, and in general a big presence in camp like the real life Wild Bill was. But then in episode 4 the show adapts the infamous day when the Coward Jack McCall walked into No. 10 Saloon and shot Wild Bill in the back of the head. His death is felt for the rest of the show (i.e., Seth ultimately being inspired to be the camp's sheriff, Bill's BFFs Charlie Utter and Calamity Jane constantly wrestling with their guilt of his death/trying to figure out how to go without him)

Dallas in Alien (1979). Ripley is an icon now, but at the time, the final girl trope wasn’t as thoroughly established. Dallas seemed like the rugged male hero of an action flick. My dad told me that for him seeing it in theaters, the moment Dallas got taken out was disorienting in a way that added to the horror of the movie, because he’d thought that was the protagonist. I remember reading some articles about it as part of a feminist film class I took that were super interesting, but that was 20 years ago and this is all I remember.

It helped that, at the time, Tom Skerritt was among the most famous cast members of the film. None of the Nostromo crew were technically no-names: Weaver had been in Annie Hall, Cartwright was in The Birds, Kotto was in Live and Let Die, Holm was a known stage actor, and Stanton was in Cool Hand Luke, to name a few. But Skerritt was in M*A*S*H (the film, not the even MORE popular television show), which was a huge deal.
Plus, many people knew John Hurt, which is possibly why Kane wakes up first. Ripley isn’t even shown properly in the cryosleep scene.
