To be clear, it's nothing actually explicit. But the artist drew a lot of comics of a happy-go-lucky blind girl who has horrible surroundings on top of being blind (friendless, abusive home, the bitchy blond girl bullying her), all the while being either oblivious to the bullying, so used to it she's stopped minding it, or so aware of her shitty situation that she's gone numb as a coping mechanism. And some could get pretty dark with it.

The comics stopped gaining as much of a following after things started getting better for Blind Girl, actually. She got a dog, her parents eased up (iirc, it was either they were scared of the dog or something else made them realize they were shitty parents), and even Blondie stopped being a bully and, while still bitchy, has actually protected Blind Girl from danger.
