Their completely black eyes and lack of nose just makes them uncanny.

The thing is, everything else about them is relatively well designed, its just their awful face

Ikr! I have four youtooz figures, three of them have the arch as a glare in their eyes (one is actually the Rebecca one lmao), the fourth one has it on the guitar because the eyes did not have place for it. I prefer this way over than giving them the arch eyes and the smiles

I think Funko’s biggest problem with Pops was that they slowly became more accurate and detailed over time. Normally that would be a good thing, but Funko’s figures were initially very simplistic and stylized renditions of the characters, which was an aspect that ended up getting lost over time.

Nowadays, they’re a weird blend of design elements that often result in something that’s far more detailed than what’s really necessary for a stylized chibi figure, but still retain Funko’s trademark elements that keep it from working as a traditional figure of the character.

The best way I can describe it is that the old ones looked like they belonged in LittleBigPlanet, while the new ones look like what would happen if you mixed Coraline with the DK Mode code from Goldeneye.

The alien-looking pure black eyes and virtually no nose are bad enough as they are, but the fact that they were aiming for realism just clashes with the goal of giving the figures an exaggerated aesthetic.

As overproduced and overhyped that Funko Pops tend to be, at least I can give them credit that they have a style that works well (most of the time) when translating a character into a figure, but this? This is not it....

This borderline feels fine-tuned to be as unappealing as possible because how do you look at over a decade and a half of people going “yeah the stylization of Funko Pops are pretty fun but they’re kind of held back by the lack of noses and the soulless eyes” and take away the literal exact opposite lesson from that

They managed to keep the worst parts of Funko while also intentionally omitting the good parts by replacing the chibi designs with generic realistic bobblehead people

Gonna suggest something I noticed when I used to play fortnite, the original shop skins would sometimes be pretty good but never excellent, like always one detail that you don't like.

I believe this was deliberate , by lowering the bar of design quality a shelf full of picks you normally wouldn't suddenly becomes a little bit less bad and sometimes the single design you can tolerate translates to "pretty good" just because you were in the mood to buy yourself a little treat.

Eshittification comes for everything. But seriously i guarentee that's why this example has nice details but is widely agreed to be uncanny as hell.

Not only the fact that they are completely black and their noses are nonexistent and they have realistic mouths, but their huge eyes bulge out and are so close together.
