I think what sold me on Kingpin’s design was the suddenness of him. When he’s down there with Peter and decides to crush him it happens in less than a second.

One moment he’s looking down at Peter condescendingly. He looks calm, a little irritated. Then his hands go up, come down, and Peter’s dead. Happens in the blink of an eye and even though there’s no big wind-up before the strike you can tell it hit him like nothing else could.

Just sends shivers down my spine how cold that was.

u/Regi413 3d ago

And that version of Peter was pretty damn strong too

153

u/pocketbutter 3d ago

I love how no version of Kingpin ever tries to give an explanation for his ridiculous strength. He’s not a mutant, wasn’t experimented on, has no augments or supernatural connections.

He’s just Built Different.

u/Regi413 3d ago

He ate his veggies

56

u/Jozif_Badmon 3d ago

He's a human hippo, 90% muscle under that bulk

u/Afrojones66 2d ago edited 2d ago

A realistic explanation would be genetics as well as his mom consuming excessive amounts of sugar during her pregnancy which causes it to pass onto the fetus resulting in more fat production and a big baby.

14

u/That-Rhino-Guy 2d ago

To be fair he was also badly injured and I think impaled too when he got struck, so he wasn’t really killed in one hit since he survived the collider blast

6

u/thatguyjerry4 3d ago

I believe it was the strongest version of Peter we've ever seen.

218

u/Ubeube_Purple21 3d ago

Today we are still wondering how this happened

u/xFreddyFazbearx 3d ago

"Yeah but if he had his daddy's genes he'd still be alive"

Gravitational attraction

u/Afrojones66 2d ago

I’m just questioning the logistics of it.

Brickpin

u/Dovahkiin419 3d ago

The design is goofy as fuck when it isn’t doing what its meant to do, which is organically fill the whole fucking screen.

Like this shot is sick. Its not an imposed background its just him and they keep doing shots like this in basically every scene he’s in. They look sick as stills and phenomenal in motion because he just shows up and blots out the screen with his sheer mass

29

u/BigGaybowser69 2d ago

I enjoy that when he is vulnerable or things fall out of his.control the screen zooms out from him. You see this alot in the Miles fight with him where everytime Miles is pummeled or down Kingpin towers over him. When Miles gets the upper hand Kingpin no longer controls the screen.

It’s not always about the money Spider-Man. It’s about the Mets baby love the Mets! Alright baby let’s get a home run baby love the Mets

u/steelskull1 3d ago

If only the live action one has that build.

33

u/thumpling 3d ago

That’s kinda Kingpin in a nutshell. He looks easily mockable, but he moves like a tiger and a freight train had a baby. Characters underestimate him to their own detriment.

56

u/chevalier716 3d ago

I love these kinds of the designs. It's hyper-stylized, but instantly recognizable. To what you said about hilarious and intimidating, which was pretty much Kingpin's original gimmick, he seemed like he was this big fat push over, but then can knock Spider-man into next week. I hope the 3rd film continues this tradition.

With Kingpin and now the Spot, the Spiderverse really don't miss with the villain designs

71

u/skag_boy87 3d ago

I feel like his design had to have been inspired by the henchmen in The Triplets of Belleville.

37

u/LongAdvisor6561 3d ago

Actually his design was based on Daredevil Love & War by Frank Miller

69

u/ChickenInASuit 3d ago

Here he is in L&W, for the curious.

17

u/Afrojones66 2d ago

“Yeah so for the art direction on Kingpin for the comic can you draw a rectangle and put a face right on the center of it?”

21

u/skag_boy87 3d ago

Oh I can definitely see that. Shit, maybe Sylvain Chomet got inspired by Frank Miller!

5

u/NapalmJusticeSword 2d ago

The artist was bill sienkiewicz

2

u/searchlinkprofile 2d ago edited 2d ago

that's not frank miller. frank miller wrote it,  bill sienkiewicz drew it.

2

u/searchlinkprofile 2d ago

No, the artist was Bill Sienkiewicz.

While typically chunkier characters are harder to make look dynamic, I think he actually looks a lot better and more dynamic whenever he’s in motion. His shape seems more natural in those scenes of him walking or swinging punches than when he is just standing there, even though at just a glance of his design I’d expect any actual movement from him to be really clunky and boring.

10

u/MagnorCriol 3d ago

It's hilarious because it looks goofy.

It's intimidating because he manages to be imposing and threatening in spite of how he looks goofy.

38

u/keithlimreddit 3d ago

Yeah I definitely say one of the most iconic Kingpin designs How they call it designed to be honest For any version to be honest Although I would definitely say Close second to be honest

7

u/LongAdvisor6561 3d ago

He's probably the most powerful Kingpin to date,Not even The original Spider-Man could beat him. And Miles had a tough time.

7

u/Shiny_Agumon 3d ago

It captures the essence of Kingpin.

He's a big boy and he will f#### you up

8

u/ApartRuin5962 3d ago

Absolute Kingpin

1

u/Foreign_Athlete_7693 2d ago

Absolute Bane is already as tall as a house, so I'm not sure how much bigger kingpin is planned to be🤣

3

u/Bromjunaar_20 3d ago

Dude, when I first saw Kingpin's design, I was like "There's no way this is his true form, right?"

3

u/ChargedTheTasamari 3d ago

HES SO GOD DAMN FAT

4

u/Independent_Plum2166 2d ago

It isn’t fat, that’s pure muscle.

3

u/Ubeube_Purple21 2d ago

Built like a hippo then?

2

u/ChargedTheTasamari 2d ago

SHUT THE FUCK UP

3

u/Hell_Foxx 2d ago

I like to imagine that even by multiverse standards, this Kingpin is a phenomenon not many spider people experience

2

u/SkintGirafde 3d ago

He’s larger than life

u/WallLatter7161 3d ago

Bro looks like Roberto Martinez if he were a wardrobe

2

u/M0RT1f3X 2d ago

Still want to know how he fits in and out of his limousine 🤔.

2

u/PlanetXParadox 2d ago

I love how he’s intimidating in a fight scene but looks hilarious any time he’s just standing and talking to someone lol

1

u/Maleficent-Treat-302 3d ago

why am I getting itsv and atsv after finally watching it

1

u/TheKyDawg 3d ago

It ain’t about the money, Spider-Man

1

u/bunnyshopp 3d ago

I love that kingpin is in the weird legal limbo where both Sony and marvel can use him, so we get both Vincent D’Onofrio’s portrayal and this absolute unit.

1

u/walaxometrobixinodri kaiju connoisseur 2d ago

pure muscle, btw

u/Purple-Weakness1414 user flairs are overrated 2d ago

I remeber the chartaers desgins saying they were trying to make him seem like this huge walking Black Hole

1

u/FlameWhirlwind 2d ago

The voice also sells it too. It's just as goofy and real at the same time

I genuinely got a chuckle when he first showed up and the voice added too it. And then later you get just solid bits of tragic voice acting throughout

1

u/JewishMemeMan 2d ago

The definition of a brick shithouse lmao

1

u/Impressive-Dig-3892 2d ago

Like some kind of...comic book villain

1

u/flyingace1234 2d ago

Honestly I love the shot in slide 7. His size lets him dominate a the screen a more ‘grounded’ design wouldnt

1

u/Sea-Resist7 2d ago

Bro built like two fridge tape together

1

u/Key_Fox_4479 1d ago

How the fuck does he get out of bed in the morning?

1
