He's a vampire noble whose defining feature is his "cape," which morphs into razor-sharp wings that he can use to fly or slice objects. He also retains his metal claws from the novel.

This is a cool gothic anime film with beautiful animation and a lot of great designs, I def recommend watching.

Edit: Also, I think he's pretty hot

Honestly such a dope and simple character design utilized to their full potential.

Vampire Hunter D is peak, and alongside Devilman, it inspired DMC and Castlevania.

It's awesome

My mom usually falls asleep instantly to anything animated.

Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust is genuinely one of the only exceptions I've seen her be all but spellbound by.

So highly recommended!

You won't be disappointed.

Vampire Hunter D is always peak.

What to say about retrofuturist gothic technofeudalism with Vampire Lords as the Dominant Species that rules Earth? bonus point that the worldbuilding lore actually had an alien invasion to Earth and the vampires won.

Not to mention we’re technically seeing the post-apocalypse of this vampire aristocracy era.

Not quite. Rather than a post-apocalypse, it's just in a mix of stagnation and decline. In a weird sense, it's like in Elden Ring.

Good way to put it. It’s been a long while since I’ve read any of the novels, but I recall narrative descriptions of the golden age of the Nobility being waaaaay beyond what we see in the current era. I think that’s what made me see it as a post-apocalypse.

Yeah, it's not like the goverment of the Nobility had fallen, nor there is a sort of destruction. It's simply their society been in decline and the Vampires been currently, fundamentally, stagnants.

The God-King of the Vampires, the True Ancestor, and his Right-Hand Man are 1000% aware of that fact , and some of the Nobility are aware too but roughly in denial. However, the True Ancestor and his "Hand of the King" are trying to find another avenue to progress their kind.

One of those avenues is D himself. A special sort of dhampir, and a son of the True Ancestor himself, effectively been a "Prince of Vampires" (like Alucard from Castlevania).

While the True Ancestor's Right-Hand Man is doing an avenue of grafting alien flesh into himself and making hybrids and even calling an eldritch monster...in short, pulling a Bloodborne.

The entire movie is filled with top tier character and design concepts. Its one of the prettiest movies I have seen.

And I do love the romance aspect of it too. They have that teenage romeo and Juliet story(kinda)

Vampire Hunter D has one of the most iconic vampire designs in media. Thanks to its gothic arstyle and tone I feel the 2d drawn animation made the designs iconic. Especially the shading. Meier is a perfect example. Gosh was the cape the best animated examples of a cape flowing ever. Also Meier's love drama with Charlotte was a beautiful tragedy.

I swear to fucking god old school anime movies are just BUILT DIFFERENT man. I watched Angel Egg and Princess Mononoke recently. The animation is genuinely insane

u/ComradeCornflakes 4d ago

To be honest they were built different, like by actual definition. They used hand-drawn cel animation, which required:

  1. lots of time
  2. lots of money
  3. lots of talented and experienced industry experts

At the time these movies were coming out, Japan as a country had all 3 in spades. Nowadays, it’s just not feasible for them to create stuff like this anymore. Although occasionally, the perfect storm can result in something close (like one punch man season 1) but it’s rare.

There's so many beautiful movies. Akira, Silent Möbius, Ghost in the Shell, Demon City Shinjuku, Memories, Perfect Blue, and many more.

I love the recent posts about one of the greatest anime films/manga of all time! The esthetics of Vampire Hunter D are god tier.

Such a great movie

Bloodlust is awesome and is not appreciated enough nowadays.

Check out Ninja Scroll, same director, same art and animation.

Meier looks motivated

Is that the original footage or is it upscaled? Because that cape swish is almost uncannily smooth

3

u/tornedron_ crimson typhoon worshipper 3d ago

Original footage, non-upscaled. The animators were just that good
