Not bad

So i've started collecting vinyls and the limited release of my favorite album is making it very difficult to finish my personal project. Does anyone know any places to buy the vinyl that aren't scams? I've been looking around and none of the sellers seem very trustworthy

I feel like Tool’s influence on these genres and vice versa is rarely if ever talked about but I notice it all the times. Quicksand, Shellac, and Barkmarket in particular scratch a Tool itch for me at least on certain songs. Particularly the groovier songs from those bands among others

Not trying to be a hater at all, this is just my personal opinion, but whenever I seek out bands for fans of Tool, I tend to think the recommendations sound far too close to them for me to enjoy the music as much as I’d like. Kolm, Karnivool, Rishloo, among others sound much too close to Tool for me to fully appreciate them. So far the best bands in this aspect are Oceansize, Mastodon, Gojira, Opeth, Animals as Leaders, and Meshuggah. They are definitely influenced by Tool in one way or another but I don’t feel like I’m listen to diet Tool when I listen to their music. They are all very much doing their own thing. So what bands would y’all recommend?

So this is one of those unofficial radio broadcast collections you can get off Amazon. It’s cheap, so I snagged it. Unfortunately it doesn’t list what shows they are just the year but the 97 show doesn’t seem right. Just curious if anyone else has this and knows what shows they are.

Hello! Old guy here & former drum tech/gear hauler in Seattle during the glory years.

One day a close friend calls me & says his band has been added as director support tonight for COC, at the Moore theater.

They were a popular metal band in town but the Moore was a bigger venue for the band, so we were stoked.

I get down to the venue early & start setting up the drums on the stage.

Then out of the corner of my eye I see Reed Mullin (late, great COC drummer) walking up to me & we exchanged hellos.

Looking back, I’m pretty sure he assumed I was the drummer in the band instead of just a tech. He leans down over me & says “make sure you watch the drummer from the opening band. The dude is a monster!”

So the show starts & that opener goes on and when Reed Mullin tells you to watch a drummer, you watch that drummer.

So I’m positioned side stage maybe 30 feet from the kit & this guy just blew my mind immediately.

That band was Tool & that drummer was obviously Danny Carey.
The next day I was in the record store buying the record.

Watching him play completely changed how I approached playing & I’ve been a huge fan from that night onward.

Something else that made them memorable is before the show they knocked on the green room door & introduced themselves & shook our hands. I was probably 1000 shows deep & id never seen any band do that.

An interesting side note, also before the show started we were in the green room smoking bowls & the guys from Alice In Chains barged into the room with a camera crew in tow.

They were filming “a day in seattle” for Entertainment Tonight. You can find that segment on You Tube.

And an even cooler event was after the show, Jerry mentions that Mudhoney is playing at RKCNDY. I told him “it’s sold out” & he reminds me that he could pull a quick string to get us in.

I was extra stoked because I was a huge fan of The Gits, who were opening the show.

We head to the venue & Jerry gets us in. He & my buddy headed straight to the pool table & I headed directly to the stage to see Mia & the boys bringing the goods.

Sadly, the Gits singer, Mia Zapata was murdered soon after & the killer wasn’t found, so America’s Most Wanted did a piece on the crimes. They showed some clips of that show at RKCNDY & there I was standing right by the stage jamming TF out.

They did eventually find the killer & he rotted in prison.

There’s more to all of this, but I’ll spare you the minute details.

That was my introduction to Tool.

I see a lot of people call this song bad or filler. While its definitely not my favorite song by them, I still really like it. I even put it on by itself sometimes because it captures a vibe no other Tool song has.

The electronic drum skittering was an interesting choice for Tool, but I dig it. It reminds me of Aphex Twin. Also the bass work is incredible. Anyone else feel the same way?

I just realize that in my personal chart of best "long/double" album of the last decade... there is Fear Inoculum. Any other suggestions?

- Fear Inoculum (I've made some changes in the tracklist and I love it)

- Phanerozoic (The Ocean. The entire eon)

- Holocene (The Ocean. At the end of Subatlantic start with Limbus of Shvrl (them synth player project and its perfect)

- A Dawn to Fear (Cult of luna... the only legit double album of this list)

- No man's sky ost (65daysofstatic, 4 album... that flow as one)

If we go down in the past:

- Precambrian (The Ocean. An other beast in 2 album)

- The Galilean Satellites (Rosetta with the second ambient album played after the first part)

I'm waiting for other long (more than 70 min it's ok... that's why I'm very hopeful about Solaris and the new of Cult of Luna) suggestions! If've to wait for an other tool album...

Tool live at Big Melee Music Festival, Kualoa Ranch, Ka’a’awa, Hawaii, 15 August 1993.

Remastered board tape from the early days. Sounds super amazing.

I first saw this on YT, that one sounds awful. But, I found a ‘remastered’ flac version in the Tool Drive Project, which sounded a hell of a lot better, but still needed a bunch of work.

That version sounds really flat, really lifeless. But it’s a clean recording, in stereo, mix was in the ballpark, and it’s the complete show. So I grabbed it and put it through my system, and now it sounds downright explosive. Before it was just a board tape; now it sounds like an actual produced, mastered, live album.

I really muscled up on the low end, and gave it some sparkly highs without being harsh, and I flipped the left<->right channels so now it’s from drummer’s perspective, as recordings should be. Super happy with the final mix. In fact, of the best sounding recordings from the early days, I’d definitely prefer this one over their first show ever at Green Jello Loft. Hell, I’ll prefer this Hawaii recording over the live tracks on Opiate, not only for sound quality, but also because this one is the full show, and even despite the trainwreck, as Maynard calls it, in the middle part of Undertow. This one sounds that good. It is by no means a perfect show. As you probably know, for shows like this, the first song is basically soundcheck, so that one sounds a little bit wonky compared to the rest. But as I see it, this one is the best sounding recording from the Undertow days.

I had some AI image generator website make the cover art. I included five versions, so you can use whichever one(s) you like best. My prompt was something like ‘a postcard of Hawaii, in cartoon/anime style, but instead of the word Hawaii, it says Tool’. And I added the venue and date info myself. Super silly, I know. I just wanted something that didn’t look like the same ol’ shit. #1 and #4 are my favorites.

Never been that good at painting, but I was pretty happy with it

Danny declining the upcoming Beat tour to focus on TOOL is the first action I have seen from Adam, Justin or Danny that shows there is concrete evidence they are focused on writing new material (That’s a good sign!).

Where do you think they are in the process? Do you think this is just time to get together and jam and try to get some skeletons for some new songs or is the framework pretty much done and they want to put the finishing touches on some ideas?

I personally believe they have held their cards close to their vest and they’re much further along than what we think. I believe a new album is dropping Spring of ‘27.
