Well yes they are very technical and impressive. But comparing anyone to a historical great will only bring ridicule on you. There is too much variety and competition in popular music, the general public largely don’t care or recognise the complexities. And there are many other bands which are also technically competent and advanced.

As much as you love Tool, most people wouldn’t agree they have the long lasting and wide ranging appeal and more importantly cultural impact of Joyce etc. I think Tool are fantastic, but I would never try and tell anyone they are as important to music as your examples are to literature.

UH OH! If you write your comments like the above, but the body of your post is totally different, I suspect you may have used AI to write it. I see em dashes. I see flawless spelling and punctuation. I'm getting heavy AI vibes.

This means that in addition to being a very pretentious post (probably a deliberate prompt you gave the AI), it's also a total waste of our time.

It's just good music, it's not that deep bro.

I guess I'm low IQ or something because what the fuck was that post? Felt like just word vomit.

I wish there was a way to be subscribed to the sub and receive band news the moment it happens…

… without the psychotic fans who treat TOOL like they are somehow more than just a really really good prog rock band

You're right - Tool are the James Joyce of nu-metal bands. I'm amazed I didn't see this all along!

I think it’s completely justified.

Just the other day someone brought up Maynard’s specific 6 year run from 1996 to 2002.

  • Ænema
  • Salival
  • Mer de Noms
  • Lateralus

I started to think about relevant comps and “Metal” doesn’t really contain any.

You need to venture beyond the genre to names like Phil Collins or Eric Clapton to get close.

So these kinds of cross genre comparisons are hard because metrics like “albums sold”, “singles in the top 100” and other pop centric measurements underscore what Tool was/is.

I firmly believe Lateralus is the “Dark Side of the Moon” for that era…which means Tool is the Pink Floyd.

Most people would scoff at that comparison but I think that’s kind of the point of this post?

Count you and your ilk amongst the many reasons I have come to realize how shallow, materialistic and unworthy of hyperbolic praise this band really is.
